"The church town of Gammelstad was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on December 7, 1996. It is a well-preserved example of traditional northern Scandinavian church towns. There were once 71 of these. Gammelstad's church town, with 408 houses, is the largest of Sweden's 16 church towns still in existence .

The region was an important hub for trade and markets as early as the 14th century. The Nederluleå Church was the center for a parish that stretched from the coast to Norway.

The church town of Gammelstad consists of 408 cottages and is the largest and best-preserved example of this type of settlement typical for Northern Scandinavia. The first written evidence of a church town dates back to the year 1600. The cottages used to serve - as they still do today - mainly as residences for churchgoers who came from very far away. Today, many confirmands also live in the cottages when they attend confirmation classes.

Everything here is so alive - insights through windows, in an apartment you can even go in, then the view on and in the imposing stone church from the 13th century. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is definitely worth seeing.
