The Union Brewery in Ljubljana dates back to 1864, and the Brewery Museum, established on site in 1986, is run with the support of its employees. It illustrates the history of beer in Slovenia, providing a detailed look at Slovenian production and consumption practices. This presentation, which also includes the living conditions and interests of the brewery workers, has earned the museum several awards. The exhibits come from the Institute of Hop Breeding and Brewing of the former Yugoslavia. Many were also donated to the museum by innkeepers or brewery employees. Visitors can follow the various stages of beer brewing. They experience the malthouse, the mashing process, the cellar vaults where the beer is aged and stored, the filtration and bottling plant, and the barrel storage facility. Representations of traditional Slovenian pubs with original furnishings, bottles with historical labels, and promotional materials are also on display. https://www.union-experience.si/en/discover-union-experience

Between 1921 and 1932, the park was redesigned by Joze Plečnik. Plečnik designed the wide Jakopič Promenade, which ends at the staircase in front of Tivoli Palace (home of the International Centre for Graphic Arts). Today, the promenade is also known for photography exhibitions.

While many trails are gentle, truly stroller-friendly paths are often found within Ljubljana's parks and along the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship (PST). For example, parts of Tivoli Park and paths around the city center, like the Ribja Brv (Fish Footbridge) – Ljubljana Old Town loop, are generally suitable for strollers, offering flat surfaces and easy access.
Yes, many family-friendly routes around Ljubljana are designed as circular walks, allowing you to start and end at the same point without retracing your steps. A good example is the Ljubljana Central Post Office loop, which offers a pleasant walk through the city's green areas.
Generally, dogs are welcome on most hiking trails around Ljubljana, provided they are kept on a leash and owners clean up after them. It's always a good idea to check specific park regulations, but areas like Tivoli Park and the trails on Rožnik Hill are popular spots for dog walkers.
For toddlers, shorter and flatter routes are ideal. Consider walks within Tivoli Park or along sections of the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship. These offer gentle terrain and plenty of green space for little ones to explore safely. The area around Koseze Pond also provides a lovely, easy stroll.
Absolutely! Hiking up hills like Šmarna Gora or Rožnik Hill provides fantastic panoramic views of Ljubljana and the surrounding region. For example, the Grmada Peak on Šmarna Gora loop offers rewarding vistas. You can also find interesting natural landmarks like the Grmada summit itself or the Confluence of the Sava, Ljubljanica, and Kamniška Bistrica rivers.

Ljubljana has a good public transport network. Many city-based trails, such as those in Tivoli Park, Rožnik Hill, or the Path of Remembrance and Comradeship, are easily accessible by local bus. For trails slightly further out, like Šmarna Gora, specific bus lines can take you close to the starting points. We recommend checking the local bus schedules for the most up-to-date information.

The weather is mild, and the landscapes are beautiful, with blooming flowers in spring and vibrant foliage in autumn. Summer can also be pleasant, especially in the mornings or late afternoons, but be mindful of warmer temperatures. Winter offers a different charm, with opportunities for snowy walks, but ensure paths are safe and well-maintained.
For a family hike, always pack essentials like water, snacks, sun protection (hats, sunscreen), and appropriate layers of clothing. Comfortable hiking shoes are a must. Depending on the trail, a small first-aid kit, a map or GPS device (like komoot!), and rain gear are also advisable. For younger children, consider a carrier for longer distances.
