We were here on a weekday and reserved our parking spot in advance at the nature park's information desk, as the online reservation didn't work. Time slot from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. English and German are spoken there. Very friendly staff. And it's especially worth mentioning that the parking is free! At the top of the parking lot, there's also a rancher who will gladly assist you with any questions. Top organized!!! No matter which viewpoint you want to hike to from here... each one is worth it. The trails are top and also easy to walk. Breathtaking viewpoints that will remain in your memory...... STICKS AND STURDY FOOTWEAR ARE RECOMMENDED

A deep sinkhole opens up here: It's a volcanic vent approximately 70 meters deep, which can be circumnavigated on secured paths. A few steps allow you to descend into the hole, but trying to see the bottom is doomed to failure.

Currently, komoot features 5 challenging gravel bike routes in La Palma. These trails are designed for experienced riders looking for significant elevation changes and diverse terrain.
La Palma offers excellent gravel biking conditions year-round due to its mild climate. However, the spring and autumn months (April-May and September-October) are particularly pleasant, avoiding the peak summer heat and potential winter rains. The island's diverse microclimates mean you can often find good riding conditions somewhere, even if one area is cloudy.
Yes, all the gravel bike routes currently featured on komoot for La Palma are circular. For example, you can explore the Tajogaite Volcano Viewpoint – Hoyo de la Sima loop from Los Llanos de Aridane or the La Cumbrecita Viewpoint – Viewpoint of Los Llanos loop from La Palma, both offering a complete loop experience.
La Palma's gravel trails are incredibly diverse, reflecting its 'Isla Bonita' nickname. You'll encounter everything from volcanic ash and solidified lava fields, especially around the new Tajogaite Volcano, to ancient 'caminos reales' and paths through lush laurel and pine forests. Expect significant elevation changes, as many routes climb towards viewpoints like Roque de los Muchachos, offering a rewarding challenge.
The gravel bike routes currently listed on komoot for La Palma are all rated as 'difficult' due to substantial elevation gains and technical sections. Riders should have a good level of fitness and experience with gravel or mountain biking on varied terrain. Beginners might find these routes very challenging.
La Palma's trails often pass through or near stunning natural landmarks. You can cycle past the San Antonio Volcano, experience the unique environment of the Cubo de La Galga Laurel Forest, or enjoy panoramic views from the Mirador de la Somada Alta. The island's volcanic origins and dense forests provide a constantly changing and dramatic backdrop.
While most public trails are accessible, some areas, particularly within the Caldera de Taburiente National Park or sensitive volcanic zones, may require specific permits or have restricted access. It's always advisable to check with local authorities or the National Park visitor center for the latest regulations before planning your ride, especially for off-road sections.
Regulations regarding dogs on trails vary. While some rural paths may be dog-friendly, national parks and protected natural areas often have strict rules, sometimes prohibiting dogs or requiring them to be on a leash. It's best to research specific trail regulations or contact local tourism offices for detailed information on dog-friendly policies.
Public transport options for cyclists with bikes in La Palma can be limited, especially for larger gravel bikes. While some bus lines might allow bikes outside of peak hours or with specific conditions, it's not always guaranteed. Consider checking with the local bus companies directly for their bike transport policies. Bike rental services often offer delivery and pick-up options which might be more convenient.
Parking is generally available at common starting points for popular routes, such as near Refugio del Pilar or in towns like Los Llanos de Aridane and Santa Cruz de La Palma. For routes like the Llano del Jable – Refugio del Pilar loop, designated parking areas are usually present. Always ensure you park legally and respectfully, especially in natural areas.
La Palma's unique blend of dramatic volcanic landscapes, lush 'cloud forests,' and stunning coastal views, all within a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, makes it exceptional for gravel biking. The constant change in scenery, from the recent Tajogaite Volcano to ancient laurel forests and high mountain observatories like Roque de los Muchachos, provides a dynamic and unforgettable riding experience. The island even hosts events like "Gravel Ground," highlighting its suitability for the sport. For more information on the island's natural beauty, you can visit visitlapalma.es.
