EuroVelo Route R1 – Märkische Schweiz Nature Park

Highlight (Segment) • Cycleway

The R1 is by its very nature "mixed" and is not suitable for racing bikes on many sections rather. But thanks to the sideline that was laid out on this road (more like a way !?), things are progressing well. A few hundred meters in place, i. before that way, but are catastrophically bad.

Shepherd Fountain Seelow

Highlight • Monument

There was already a fountain on the market square in Seelow before the Second World War. However, it fell victim to the fighting in the Battle of the Seelow Heights in April 1945. It was only decades later, in 1988, that the "Shepherd's Fountain" was built by Horst Engelhardt. But why a shepherd's fountain? In the past, there were numerous sheep farms around Seelow and, on market days, sheep and sheep products were traded on the market square. On a column above a small pedestal stands a roughly life-size bronze sculpture of a naked shepherd who has a sheep on his shoulders like a shawl.
The sculptor Ernst Engelhardt was born in Saxony in 1951. After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Dresden, Engelhardt settled as a freelance artist near Wriezen in the former GDR district of Frankfurt/Oder in 1976.

The incense oak stands south of Friedrichsaue next to an old arm of the Oder, facing a field. The old arm, called incense, was separated from the Oder in 1786. About ten years ago, the old Oder arm was renaturalized and now carries water again. The oak stands on the edge of a small forest called Sanssouci, a scenic gem that was given forest protection status in 1959/60. Near the oak is a dam built in 1920 by the Oderbruchbahn. The railway line has since been abandoned, and a cycle path now runs over it. The oak is still unknown in literature; it is a new discovery. The trunk shows rot on one side, the bark is partially missing but is still completely closed. A fairly large crown sits on the trunk, which is still completely intact. It shows very little dead wood, although the oak has been struck by lightning several times, most recently in 2012. The vitality of the monumental oak is still good. Can be cycled well. But nothing for bicycle trailers - the asphalted/paved paths are unfortunately too narrow for that...
