Beautiful and interesting waypoint with weir, hydroelectric power station with Archimedean screw and fish ladder. The excursion restaurant nearby is also worth a flying visit.

In Krechting we have brought the use of hydropower from the past back into the present. Where there used to be a mill, we have built a modern hydroelectric power plant. The Archimedean screw is designed in such a way that fish can safely pass through it. The complex is rounded off by a fish ladder, which enables the river dwellers to ascend and descend, thus significantly improving the living conditions in the river. The optimal functionality of the fish ladder was calculated in cooperation with the Bocholt University of Applied Sciences and is regularly monitored by the local fishing clubs. A trap was installed in the upper area of the fish ladder to monitor the actual fish migration behavior. Since 2006 we have been able to generate up to 250,000 kWh with this system. Converted, this corresponds to an annual consumption of up to 80 households. The facility is located directly on the Aa cycle route and is a popular destination.

The fish ladder at the hydroelectric power station is explained in detail here. It is obscured that fish always choose the direct path, as studies show and turbines make mush out of swimming fish. So fish ladders are not at all for fish, but primarily for people who want to believe that green hydroelectric power is fish-friendly.

The weir in Bocholt an der Aa is very beautiful and important for regulating the river level. The fish ladder next to it is very nice and offers the fish a very good opportunity to swim around the river there.
