Cretier (or Crytere, Kretier, Kreiter, etc.) is the name of a Westphalian noble family. The coat of arms of the von Cretier family is recorded in the Book of Arms of the Westphalian Nobility: Blazon: in red, a silver shield with three black birds facing right, placed in bars. Beneath the shield are six (3:2:1) golden globes. On the helmet are three red ostrich feathers. The helmet covers are red and silver. The ancestral seat of the family was the Kretier House in Rhede, also known as Hillerding Estate, which was not eligible for state parliament. The fief registers of the Bishops of Münster mention an Arnt de Wyse called Kreytier, who in 1390 sold a farm and a pasture in the Bocholt district with his wife Demoet and his children Lambert, Rotger, and Mechtild. In 1439, Berendt van der Cretier, his wife Mente, and their children Arndt, Henrich, Styne, Gertrud, Lsysecke, and Grete sold an annuity from their estates in Hilderinck and Berninck in the parish of Rhede and the farmstead of Verdinckholte (now Vardingholt) before the Bocholt judge, Johann Tenckinck of the House of Tenking in Rhede. In 1485, Johann van Rede was granted the Buschusen estate in the parish of Rhede, farmstead of Verdincholte, which had previously been held as a fief by the deceased Johann van Cretier. The Kretier House in Rhede was first documented in the 14th century, but the estate may have existed even earlier. Like many other noble and manor houses in the western Münsterland, Haus Kretier is surrounded by a moat. The forest around it and also a road are named after the noble family Cretier. Over the centuries, the estate had many owners until it finally came into the possession of the van Hövell family in 1737. The estate still belongs to them today and is therefore privately owned. A visit is only possible from the outside. The Hövell family has a beautiful burial site in the cemetery in Rhede. The Rhede Tourist Office offers a "Legend Safari" which includes a visit to Haus Kretier. A legend from the 17th century says that there was a "blood rain" there in 1671. It is said that blood rained down, which froze into red ice due to the cold weather. (Source: burgenundschloesser.de) The van Hövell family is a Westphalian-Dutch noble family and has been divided into a Catholic line (van Hövell) and a Protestant line (van Hoevell) since the Reformation. In 1737, Johann Hermann Winold van Hövell and Anna Judith Elisabeth von Coevorden married. As early as the 14th century, the first members of the family also came to the Dutch province of Overijssel. Arnold Johann von Hoevell was entered into the nobility register of the Prussian Rhine Province on July 12, 1829, in the class of nobles under No. 136. The coat of arms (Westphalian nobility) of the von Hövel(l) family: In gold, 3 black planing irons (= Höwel) placed in a Winkel in the middle of the shield. On the crowned helmet with black-gold helmet covers, a black wing. (Source: Wikipedia on the noble family Hövell)
