A popular refuge for waterfowl of all kinds. Since the area is also quite wooded, it's not possible to see deep into the reserve basin from every corner. Depending on the wildlife activity, the path along the dike can be quite lengthy.

The 330 m long overflow sill, the inlet of the Alfsee, was built in 1974 with a 10 hectare settling basin. This is where sand and alluvial particles that would worsen the water quality of the lake are supposed to settle. The outlet structure was also built in 1974.

Alfhausen-Rieste flood retention basin With a storage capacity of up to 20.8 million cubic meters, the Alfhausen-Rieste flood retention basin between Bramsche and Bersenbrück is the second largest such facility in Lower Saxony. The structure, built between 1970 and 1996, absorbs a large portion of the Hase flood water via a feeder when required and releases its contents back into the Hase in measured amounts via the drain after the flood event has passed. Before the basin was put into operation, the Hase overflowed its banks here during small to medium floods and flooded large valley areas as far as the Cloppenburg area - including many populated areas. The facility consists of a main basin and a reserve basin, which is used as soon as the storage capacity of the main basin, the so-called "Alfsee", is exhausted. Even if the reserve basin is full during major floods (e.g. a 25-year flood), the remaining flood water must be channelled through or partly discharged via the Tiefe Hase in the Hase valley floodplain.

The entire reserve basin, including the dams, covers an area of 152.5 hectares, and the area within the dams that is protected is 123 hectares. The basin floor is at around 35.00 to 37.00 m above sea level, and the height of the dams, whose crest width is 4 m, is 43.75 m above sea level. The usable storage space is 8.1 million m³ at a height of 41.75 m above sea level. The reserve basin is flowed through by the 1.15 km long culvert between the balancing and outlet structures. Around 30 m³ of water per second can be drained from the Alfsee via the culvert. The basin is only flooded during particularly large floods, when the 12.7 million m³ storage space of the main basin is exhausted and the water cannot be drained via the Hase.
