This beautifully designed seating area, created by wood sculptor Max Müller, is located on Burgstrasse, right next to the Victoria Rondell at the beginning of the footpath to the fortress, and is part of the children's play area. Beautifully designed and decorated with carvings, the space is not only an eye-catcher but also invites you to linger for a while.

In keeping with the artistically minded sovereign's philosophy, the theatrical element was not neglected in the design of this outdoor retreat. A small arbor was created on the Commandant's Building beneath a monumental scene depicting Saint George fighting his archenemy – the dragon. Since the 19th century, the Commandant's Building has been adorned with a monumental mural depicting Saint George with the dragon. It was commissioned by Duke George II, a likely coincidence in their names. Source: https://blog.thueringerschloesser.de/veranda-fuer-den-herzog/

The Werra River is fed by two springs and flows through Germany's geographical center. A variety of wonderful spots await the leisurely stroller along the riverside paths. One of these is located here on the way to the Eisfelder Ausspanne (Eisfelder Rest Area). The water is very cold. A seating area is available. From here, several paths lead up towards the Rennsteig Trail. The descent from there leads past the idyllic rafting pond to Sachsenbrunn with its centuries-old dancing linden tree. The dammed water was once used for floating logs, hence the name.

The "Tiefkeller Veste Heldburg (Heidenbaukeller)" (DE 5730-305) FFH area was proposed as a FFH area by the Thuringian Ministry of the Environment in June 2004 and reported to the EU Commission via the Federal Ministry for the Environment. Its inclusion in the list of sites of Community importance in the Continental Biogeographical Region was confirmed by the EU Commission in November 2007 (Official Journal of the European Union - EC No. L 12/383 of November 13, 2007). Heldburg Fortress was a high medieval hilltop castle that was rebuilt in the 16th century as a Renaissance-style palace. It rises 113 meters above the town of Heldburg in the Heldburg region, the southernmost tip of the Hildburghausen district in Thuringia, on a 405-meter-high volcanic cone belonging to the former Heldburger Gangschar volcanic region. Founded in the 12th or 13th century, it has been called the "Franconian Light" since the 14th century due to its prominent location, a counterpart to the "Franconian Crown," the nearby Coburg Fortress. Heldburg Fortress is the only Thuringian fortress listed as a sight on the Castle Road. The French-style building of the fortress houses the German Castle Museum, which opened in September 2016. Heldburg Fortress acquired its appearance mainly in the 16th and 19th centuries. However, its history goes back much further, probably to the 12th century. The Renaissance architect Nikolaus Gromann had a decisive influence on the design of the complex. He is to be credited with having transformed the medieval castle into a representative ensemble - one with outstanding art-historical significance. He did not simply tear down what had been left behind, but cleverly integrated it into the new building project. The French building, built from 1560 onwards, is now the architectural highlight of the fortress. Source: https://www.thueringerschloesser.de/objekt/veste-heldburg/

He directed, designed costumes and stage sets, wrote treatises on director's theatre and helped the Meiningen court orchestra to new fame. George II of Saxe-Meiningen became famous as the "Theater Duke" and went down in history. Influenced by the castle romanticism of the 19th century, he realized his romantic ideas of a fairytale castle at Veste Heldburg. However, a major fire in 1982 destroyed much of the precious interior. Today, the German Castle Museum invites you to visit. Source: https://www.thueringerschloesser.de/objekt/veste-heldburg/

Hildburghausen is home to several distinctive geological features. One notable example is the Needle Eye Rock Formation, located within the picturesque "Gießübler Schweiz." This area features narrow paths winding past various rock structures like the Schröderfelsen and Dachsbachkanzel, creating a landscape reminiscent of a miniature Swiss mountain valley.
You can visit the Werra Spring Fehrenbach, one of the two sources of the Werra River. It's nestled in the Thuringian Forest between Fehrenbach and Masserberg. The spring was designed as a fountain in 1897, with water flowing from a sculpted lion's head. There's also the Werra Spring (Upper Werra Spring), which features an inviting hiking hut and a unique leaning tower.
Yes, the Chirotherium-Monument in Hildburghausen commemorates a significant paleontological discovery. It features reconstructed track plates of 240-245 million-year-old fossilized footprints made by a "hand beast" (Chirotherium), an ancient archosaur. A nearly four-meter-long bronze replica of the creature is also on display, offering a fascinating glimpse into Earth's ancient past.
Many natural monuments in Hildburghausen are suitable for families. The Werra Spring Fehrenbach and the Werra Spring (Upper Werra Spring) are both marked as family-friendly and offer huts for resting. The Needle Eye Rock Formation area also features a nature trail that provides insights into local flora and fauna, making it an engaging experience for all ages. For easy walks, explore routes like the "Nature Park Trail 'Bergwiesen- und Moorlehrpfad'" in Friedrichshöhe, which you can find in the Easy hikes in Hildburghausen guide.
For stunning panoramic views, head to Langertfelsen. This rock is accessible via an iron ladder and rewards visitors with expansive views towards the slate mountains and the surrounding Thuringian Forest. Another great spot is the Summit of Großer Gleichberg, which also offers excellent viewpoints.
Yes, the region offers numerous hiking opportunities. For example, near the Needle Eye Rock Formation, you can explore the "Gießübler Switzerland nature trail." You can find various hiking routes, including circular trails and those of moderate difficulty, in the Hiking in Hildburghausen guide.
Near the Werra Spring Fehrenbach, there is a hut that was reopened in 2019, inviting hikers and cyclists to rest and enjoy local Thuringian delicacies. The Werra Spring (Upper Werra Spring) also features an inviting hiking hut where you can get cool drinks and food in a pleasant environment.
Yes, you can visit The Tree Monument Near the Source of the Werra. Additionally, near Heldburg Fortress, there's a historic linden tree, known as the "Castle linden tree," with its own story, making it a natural monument with historical significance.
Visitors frequently praise the scenic beauty and geological interest, especially in areas like the "Gießübler Schweiz" with its unique rock formations. The accessibility of sites like the Werra Spring, combined with inviting huts offering local food, is also highly appreciated. Many enjoy the panoramic views from spots like Langertfelsen and the historical insights provided by sites like the Chirotherium-Monument.
Yes, the region offers various trails suitable for running. You can find routes like the "Eisfelder Resting Place – Rennsteigwarte on Eselsberg loop" or the "Heinz Vieweg Douglas Fir – Schleusinger Berg loop" in the Running Trails in Hildburghausen guide, which are close to many natural attractions.
The Three-current brick (Dreiherrenstein) is a historical site that served as a boundary marker. While also a man-made monument, its location in the forest and its historical significance make it a notable natural and cultural landmark in the region.
