Placer County offers a range of backcountry accommodations, from rustic Sierra Club huts like Benson Hut and Bradley Sierra Club Hut, which provide a true wilderness experience, to more developed lodges and campgrounds. While some listings might be referred to broadly as 'huts,' many are actually campgrounds or lodges offering different levels of comfort and amenities.
Benson Hut requires a challenging 5.5-mile hike or ski approach with about 1,800 feet of elevation gain in winter, though summer access by vehicle is possible. Bradley Sierra Club Hut is accessible via an approximately 4.7-mile hike or ski approach, involving a steady climb with roughly 1,600 feet of elevation gain from the Pole Creek trailhead area.
Yes, overnight stays at Sierra Club huts like Benson Hut and Bradley Sierra Club Hut require a reservation. These are typically made through the Sierra Club at Claire Tappaan Lodge in Norden, Donner Pass, for a fee.
Benson Hut is a historic stone refuge featuring six bunks downstairs and a wood floor upstairs for additional sleeping space, accommodating up to 12 people. It includes a wood-burning stove, a table, and a kitchen area. Firewood is available in a side room, and an outhouse is located about 100 feet west of the hut. There is no running water, but snow can be melted on the wood stove in winter.
Bradley Sierra Club Hut is a classic Sierra Club backcountry hut located in the Tahoe region, popular among ski tourers for its extensive backcountry terrain. Many backcountry huts, such as Benson Hut, are primarily intended for winter accommodation, offering a high-Sierra hut experience. However, they can often be used in other seasons as well. Bradley Sierra Club Hut typically closes in May to minimize wildlife disturbance and reopens in October.
While true backcountry huts like Benson and Bradley are rustic and require significant effort to reach, campgrounds such as French Meadows Campground offer family-friendly facilities.
