Antognolla Castle, located on the slopes of Monte Tezio and now part of an exclusive golf club, owes its name to the ancient Antognolla family of Perugia. First mentioned in 1174 for the presence of a Benedictine monastery, it became a fiefdom in 1399 at the behest of Pope Boniface IX. Over the following centuries, it was at the center of conflicts between noble families, until it passed to the Oddi family in 1628 and then to the Guglielmi family in 1836. After a period under the Agnelli family, it was recently restored to become a luxury resort.

Rocca di Passignano (Castle of Passignano) - Passignano sul Trasimeno The Rocca di Passignano (Castle of Passignano) is located inside the village, in an elevated position above the town, which later expanded to the lakeshore. According to some sources, Passignano could mean "place of the pass," referring to the existence of a Roman military structure that served to control a "pass" between the present-day regions of Umbria and Tuscany. Nothing remains of this possible structure today. Currently, the castle consists of ruins of medieval structures: square walls, a half-ruined tower, and the northern part of the castle with a triangular tower. Furthermore, a series of alleys wind through this part of the historic center, once surrounded by walls, giving an idea of what the street layout within the castle might have looked like. The oldest core probably dates back to the 5th or 6th century; The square walls, however, were built between 820 and 850, when the castle belonged to the Marquises of Tuscany. In 1187, the property became the property of the canons of the Cathedral of San Lorenzo in Perugia. In the 13th century, the castle underwent significant renovations, transforming it into a true fortress, an outpost, and defensive bastion of the Perugian territory. The Rocca del Leone is the medieval fortress with an irregular pentagonal structure built starting from the thirteenth century. This is the main monument of Castiglione del Lago and is definitely worth a visit.

This fortified place, and site of the discovery of an Etruscan stele still preserved in the Archaeological Museum of Umbria in Perugia, occupies an excellent strategic position and marks a further border of the Perugia area. The fort stands at about 450 meters above sea level and its privileged lookout post (in fact, it is located at the extreme border of the Perugia area dominating the road that connected Perugia to Arezzo and Florence and over the entire Arezzo plain) it hides, in its presence, the historical events that characterized it with continuous clashes between Perugia and the Tuscan cities for control of it. The region offers several historically significant castles. The Triangular Tower, Passignano sul Trasimeno, part of the Rocca di Passignano, features medieval ruins and a distinctive triangular tower. Another impressive site is Montegualandro Castle, known for its well-preserved stone walls and strategic hilltop location. Also consider Antognolla Castle, a medieval fortress with thick stone walls, and the Rocca del Leone in Castiglione del Lago, a prime example of Umbrian military architecture.
For breathtaking views of Lake Trasimeno, the Triangular Tower, Passignano sul Trasimeno is highly recommended. Climbing its 32-meter high main tower provides a 360-degree panorama. Montegualandro Castle, perched on a strategic hilltop, also offers expansive views of the lake and the Tuscan landscape, especially beautiful at sunset. The Rocca del Leone in Castiglione del Lago also provides magnificent panoramic views from its battlements.
These castles are steeped in history, reflecting centuries of conflicts and power shifts in Umbria. The Rocca di Passignano, for instance, has origins dating back to the 5th or 6th century and served as a defensive outpost for Perugia. Montegualandro Castle's strategic position was even noted as Hannibal's camp during the Battle of Lake Trasimene. Antognolla Castle transitioned from a Benedictine monastery to a fiefdom, witnessing numerous conflicts between noble families. The Rocca del Leone was built in 1247 by Frederick II on Etruscan remains, becoming one of the most impenetrable fortresses in 16th-century Europe.
Many castles in the area, such as the Triangular Tower, Passignano sul Trasimeno, offer accessible exteriors and grounds that families can explore. The Rocca di Passignano, with its narrow streets and the Museo delle Barche (Boat Museum), can be engaging for children. The Rocca del Leone in Castiglione del Lago, with its impressive architecture and open spaces, also provides an interesting historical experience for families.
The best time to visit the castles around Passignano Sul Trasimeno is generally during the spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). During these seasons, the weather is pleasant for exploring, and the natural scenery, especially around Lake Trasimeno, is particularly beautiful. Summer can be hot, while winter might be cooler with some closures.
The time needed can vary. For a site like the Triangular Tower, Passignano sul Trasimeno, including climbing the tower and visiting the Boat Museum, you might spend 1-2 hours. Exploring the exterior and grounds of Montegualandro Castle or the Rocca del Leone could also take 1-2 hours, especially if you enjoy the views and surrounding areas. If you plan to visit multiple castles or combine it with other activities, consider dedicating a full day.
Parking availability varies by location. Yes, especially for castles located within or near towns. Passignano sul Trasimeno's old town, where the Rocca di Passignano is situated, has many small restaurants and shops. Similarly, Castiglione del Lago, home to the Rocca del Leone, offers a lively center with dining options. The Rocca di Passignano even has an espresso bar with a terrace for enjoying the scenic views. For more secluded castles, dining options might require a short drive to the nearest village.
While the main attractions can draw crowds, exploring the exteriors and surrounding grounds of castles like Montegualandro Castle can offer a more tranquil experience, as it is primarily a private residence. The ruins of Rocca di Pierle, though further afield near Cortona, also provide a quieter, more reflective visit to a historic site in a state of ruin.
The primary natural feature is Lake Trasimeno itself, which offers stunning views from many castle locations. The surrounding hills provide a beautiful backdrop and opportunities for walks and scenic drives. From the Triangular Tower, you can see the lake and rolling hills. Montegualandro Castle is known for its breathtaking sunsets over the lake and Tuscan landscape. The area combines historical exploration with the natural beauty of Umbria.
Yes, the Rocca di Passignano, which includes the Triangular Tower, houses the Museo delle Barche (Boat Museum). This museum showcases traditional Trasimeno boats, including unique 13th-century "monoxylous" boats carved from single oak trunks, offering fascinating insight into local life and traditions.
Not all castles are fully accessible for interior visits. The Rocca di Passignano (including the Triangular Tower) and the Rocca del Leone in Castiglione del Lago offer interior access, often with museums or areas to explore. However, Montegualandro Castle is primarily a private residence, so while its exterior and surrounding grounds are accessible, interior visits are generally not possible. Antognolla Castle is being developed into a luxury resort, which may affect general public access to its interior.
