The Su Mannau Caves, near Fluminimaggiore, are a unique feature of their extensive cave system, among the oldest in the world. With its two branches, they are also of great archaeological and speleological interest. The right-hand section consists of an extensive karst complex of Cambrian origin and extends over several levels. Some are higher and already fossilized, others deeper and still active. The right-hand branch was formed by the Rapido River and consists of numerous and varied passages and halls, which are the most interesting sight in the cave. The first hall is of great historical importance, not least because of its connections to the nearby Punic-Roman temple of Antas. A must-see!

The Su Mannau Cave is one of the most spectacular karst caves in Sardinia. It extends for approximately 8 kilometers, although the accessible section is limited to a 500-meter path through walkways, rooms, ponds, and underground waterfalls. The first part of the visit leads to the archaeological hall, an ancient underground temple used as a water cult in the pre-Nuragic era, connected to the nearby Temple of Antas. Continuing, you enter a living environment, where stalactites, stalagmites, and alabaster flows are reflected in the clear water, home to the Stenasellus nuragicus, a tiny crustacean unique in the world. The cave is open for guided tours year-round: information and hours at https://www.sumannau.it/

From the natural lookout along the trail, a breathtaking view opens up over the Riu d'Orrida gorge, one of the wildest areas of the Linas massif. The stream flows between granite walls shaped by the water, creating natural pools and small waterfalls.

The Canal Grande di Masua is a deep inlet along the coast between Masua and Buggerru. The site is of great scientific and scenic interest and is part of the geological heritage of the Geomineral Park of Sardinia. Its limestone walls reveal one of the oldest geological sequences in Italy, with fossils documenting the first life forms on the planet. The trail leading to the canyon is well-marked but requires caution in some exposed or potentially slippery sections.

I read dramatic comments about crossing the Rio Oridda gorge. First of all, everyone does what they want....... I wait for July and for years I have been bathing in the boilers, it takes patience and I pass. It's fun to see all those wetsuits, ropes......... so my grandfather goes down too!!! P.S. we go to the waterfall and the gorge, from Monti Mannu, Figus, Linas, Muru Mannu, Oridda plain, Gutturu Abis. Walk slowly, without looking for the event. Saludusu.

Sud Sardegna's canyons showcase diverse natural features. You can find impressive geological formations, such as the ancient limestone walls of Canal Grande di Masua, which reveal some of Italy's oldest geological sequences and fossils. Other canyons feature spectacular waterfalls like Sa Spendula and Piscina Irgas, crystal-clear natural pools, and unique rock formations carved by water erosion, such as the 'Wasserlöcher des Riu d'Oridda' with its green-sparkling pools.
Yes, Sud Sardegna offers family-friendly options. The Su Mannau Cave is noted as family-friendly, offering guided tours through its impressive karst formations and underground rivers. For canyoning, Rio Zairi is considered an excellent starting point for beginners and families due to its manageable drops and clear waters, providing a thrilling yet accessible introduction to the activity.
For beginners, Rio Zairi is highly recommended. It's known as a 'baptismal font' for canyoning, featuring low vertical drops (maximum 6 meters) and crystal-clear water, making it an easy route that takes about half a day. Sa Spendula also offers an easy canyoning route, taking approximately 2.5 hours, with optional jumps and beautiful granite formations.
For those seeking a greater challenge, Piscina Irgas offers a more demanding experience. It features one of the most beautiful and tallest waterfalls in Sardinia, with a significant drop of approximately 45 meters. This route is classified as challenging/difficult and typically requires a full day, around 6 hours, to complete.
The region is rich in historical and geological significance. San Giovanni Cave is a geological and archaeological treasure, classified as the longest carriageable cave in the world, with a road accessible to pedestrians. Canal Grande di Masua is a deep coastal inlet whose limestone walls reveal one of Italy's oldest geological sequences, containing fossils that document early life forms on Earth. The Su Mannau Cave also has an archaeological hall, an ancient underground temple used for water cults.
While specific details for all canyons vary, spring and autumn are generally ideal for canyoning in Sud Sardegna. During these seasons, water levels are typically good, and the temperatures are pleasant for outdoor activities. The lush vegetation and clear waters are particularly appealing during these times.
Yes, many canyons in Sud Sardegna are surrounded by hiking opportunities. For example, the area around Canal Grande di Masua offers trekking routes, often following ancient mining paths, with panoramic sea views. The Oridda Gorge also features challenging trails. You can find various running trails in the region, including those near Capo Carbonara and Monte Ferru, which are detailed in the Running Trails in Sud Sardegna guide.
Beyond canyoning and hiking, Sud Sardegna offers a range of outdoor activities. You can explore MTB trails, such as the 'Ring of Domusnovas' which passes near San Giovanni Cave, as detailed in the MTB Trails in Sud Sardegna guide. Road cycling routes like the 'South Coast Loop' are also popular, as found in the Road Cycling Routes in Sud Sardegna guide.
Visitors frequently praise the stunning natural beauty and the sense of adventure. The unique geological formations, such as those at Canal Grande di Masua, and the picturesque waterfalls like Sa Spendula, are often highlighted. The opportunity to explore ancient caves and experience thrilling canyoning descents through wild nature also leaves a lasting impression.
While specific crowd levels can vary, exploring lesser-known trails or visiting during off-peak seasons (outside of peak summer) can help you find quieter experiences. Canyons that require a full day or are classified as challenging, like Piscina Irgas, might naturally attract fewer visitors than more accessible spots.
Parking information varies by specific canyon. For popular sites like San Giovanni Cave, there are designated parking areas, often near ticket offices or main entrances. For more remote canyoning spots, access might involve parking at trailheads or designated meeting points for guided tours. It's advisable to check specific access details for each canyon before your visit.
For certain canyoning routes, especially those that are more challenging or located within protected areas, permits or guided tours may be required. It is highly recommended to check with local guides or official tourism boards for the most up-to-date information on permit requirements for specific canyons like Sa Spendula, Rio Zairi, or Piscina Irgas.
