The Vrsic Pass impresses less with its height and more with its 51, not always easy, hairpin bends. The southern ramp from Trenta to the pass summit features 27 of these, many of them with poor visibility and narrow. On the northern ramp, the surface of many of the 24 hairpin bends still consists of cobblestones dating from the pass's expansion phase during World War I. Russian prisoners of war were deployed here, over 400 of whom perished in an avalanche in March 1916. A chapel is dedicated to them. At the summit, "parking attendants" who have been charging €2.50 for parking for several years cause annoyance.

The Great Soča Gorge (Velika Korita Soče) is undoubtedly one of Slovenia's most impressive natural spectacles. Located on the edge or at the beginning of the Lepena Valley, the famous emerald-green Soča River carves its way here through a spectacular, meters-deep limestone gorge. The gorge is about 750 meters long and only a few meters wide in places, while the steep rock walls plunge up to 15 meters into the ice-cold, turquoise water. The contrast between the jet-black limestone rock, the bright green mosses, and the unrealistically clear blue water makes this an absolute dream location for nature lovers and photographers. At the end of the narrow passage, the gorge opens into a fantastic, fairytale-like water basin. This is a favorite spot for adventurers to take a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear river water from the high rocks, although it requires some courage as the mountain water rarely gets warmer than about ten degrees. You can easily explore the Great Soča Gorge via the famous Soča Trail that runs right alongside it. Narrow forest paths and wooden suspension bridges offer you a new, breathtaking view of the wild forces of nature again and again along the way.
