In a sermon on Good Friday, Innsbruck Bishop Reinhold STECHER spoke of how the darkness of the day Christ died on the cross was illuminated by flashes of divine insight, comparable to heat lightning in the mountains that moves through and brightens the dark sky. “The first flash strikes a man from the rich establishment of Jerusalem. We cannot even measure what the decision to give Jesus an honorary grave meant for Joseph of Arimathea,” said the popular pastor, referring to the Gospel of John (19:39-42). “Crucified people were otherwise thrown onto the rubbish heaps; in the eyes of the world at that time, they were not only physically but also morally finished. The councillor Joseph of Arimathea made himself socially impossible with this act. But he was struck by the flash [of an Easter insight].”

To the left and right are cellars and press houses, but nobody lives here. The cellar itself is a passageway dug into the loess, cool and evenly tempered. This is how wine used to be stored, long before refrigeration technology existed. The press house above was purely a workspace. That's where the grapes came in and were pressed. In Stoitzendorf, such an alleyway runs through a wide hollow way, built almost continuously on both slopes, cellar after cellar, some with press houses, some without. Above them are old walnut trees that provide shade all summer long. Book a guided tour for more interesting information on the topic: https://www.weinviertel.at/kellergassenfuehrungen.

In front of the gates of the monastery church, on Baptist-Stöger-Platz, we find the memorial stone for the Schubert-Linde on a green traffic island. The stone is placed on a prismatic, flat base, with the relief image of a lyre and in the area of the strings with the text: Franz Schubert Linde 19 19/11 28. The design for the memorial stone comes from Director Süss, the stonemasonry work was carried out by Mr. Schlagenhofer. In 1997, the inscription was renovated by the Eggenburg Beautification Association.

The ossuary, located northeast of the church, was first documented in 1299. The upper structure, most recently used as a chapel by the Michaelsbruderschaft, was demolished in 1792. During archaeological excavations, the underground ossuary from the 13th century was rediscovered. The substructure has been renovated and can be visited. Here you can see the bones of approx. 5000 people, which were artfully stacked as a "memento mori" (Latin for "remember death").
