July 25, 2026, Mont Bélair

At 485 metres, Mont-Bélair is one of the highest points in the Québec City region. Rocky escarpments, extensive wetlands, and mature forest create a surprisingly wild landscape just a short drive from the city, while viewpoints across the Laurentians reward the climb.

Mont-Bélair Natural Park protects one of the highest points in the Québec City region, rising to 485 metres above sea level. The park is known for its rocky escarpments, forests, wetlands, and three small lakes, creating a surprisingly varied landscape within the city limits. Trails lead through quiet woodland, around Lac Alain and nearby marshes, and up to viewpoints overlooking the surrounding countryside. The mix of summit views, wetland habitats, and diverse ecosystems makes this one of the most rewarding natural areas in the Québec City region.

Nestled beneath the slopes of Mont-Bélair, Lac Alain provides a peaceful contrast to the park's higher viewpoints and rocky ridges. A trail circles much of the shoreline, passing through forest and wetland habitat where beavers, waterfowl, and other wildlife are often seen.

A green truss bridge takes you over the water between the green in Parc Chauveau and a little boardwalk overlook on the peninsula on the south side of the river trail. Wide tracks of gravel and stone lay in the riverbed, and you can explore the water's edge near the bend.

The bridge takes you high over the gushing man-made falls of the weir, which also serves to control ice flow in winter. You get a great view of the Saint Charles from above, and the neighbourhoods are mostly shrouded by trees.

The trail is well constructed - wooden steps take you up a hill near the riverbank, and as you stroll through the woods you get a nice view of the water. This spot is especially beautiful in autumn when the leaves change.

Kabir Kouba Waterfall cascades down into a limestone canyon and can be seen from two lookout platforms just meters away from the parking area. The falls are significant to the Huron-Wendat Nation, to learn more about that significance, read the interpretive signage around the falls.

The Gaby-Pleau Suspension Bridge is only open to pedestrian traffic. There is a set of stairs on each side, and the bridge stretches across the Rivière Saint-Charles. This suspension bridge sways as it's crossed, and the best time of the year to visit is in fall when the surrounding trees turn bright red, orange, and yellow.
