July 16, 2026, Hot Tamale Trail

This short section of trail in the gorgeous woodland above Nanaimo is popular with both hikers and mountain bikers. Expect rooty singletrack, a since of peace and lovely scenery.

Some hikers park along Nanaimo River Road to begin the trail directly from this point, while others choose to start from the Red Gate parking lot about 1 km away. If you park at the lot, you’ll need to walk roughly a kilometer along Nanaimo River Road to reach this section — an easy roadside stretch if you’re comfortable walking near light traffic.

October 22, 2025, Small cave

A small cave along the Nanaimo River where clear water flows straight out of the rocks, feeding the river below. In summer, a few metres upstream, locals use the opposite bank as a cliff-jumping spot when the water levels are high enough.

October 22, 2025, Nanaimo River

The Pipeline Trail runs alongside the Nanaimo River for much of the route. You’ll often hear the river through the trees even when it’s out of sight, and there are a few clearings where you can catch glimpses of the water below. Its steady flow and forest backdrop make this one of the trail’s defining features.

The Thistle Mine (copper, mined by 6 men. What hard hard work!) is steep grade to site. We biked along one of the MANY old logging roads, then hiked up.
