Tips from the Community

February 22, 2024, Ritter Springs Park

Ritter Springs Park is the terminus for the Fulbright Spring Greenway. The trails here are not always marked clearly, so bring navigation if riding beyond the paved Scott Road. The park has restrooms, playground equipment, benches, picnic tables, barbecue grills, a small lake, a pavilion, and even a sand volleyball court and archery range. The bridge over the small spillway is a popular spot for photos. There is also a small cave at the north end of the park.

The parking area for the Little Bit Loop backs up to Fellows Lake and a small boat dock. All the trails next to the water have sporadic views, but the only trails starting from this trailhead spend the majority of their time in the woods. This is really the only open view you get if you are doing the Little Bit Loop.

Lake Drummund is a small lake (sort of like a pond) sandwiched between the outer trail at Nathanael Greene Park and the South Creek Greenway. This is a great spot to view wildlife. Both the paved and singletrack trails have a view of the water.

Nathanael Greene Park shares the property with the Springfield Botanical Gardens. There are walking paths around the gardens, ponds, and gazebos, and the paths even connect to the South Creek Greenway that passes by Lake Drummund.

The Sac River Trail System is located in Ritter Springs Park and features a bunch of intertwining singletrack trails. All the trails are marked pretty well with different colored blazes, and there is a perimeter loop that basically circles around everything. There are popular trails for hikers, mountain bikers, and trail runners, so be aware of other users when you're out on the park trails.

The Blue Loop is the outermost trail in the Sac River Trail System, and it gets right up on the edge of the river a few times. Most of these trails stay tucked in the trees, so it's hard to get a lot of open views. This trail also offers the chance for a lot of solitude.

Along with grassy nature trails, the Fulbright Spring Greenway runs through the middle of Ritter Springs Park. Not all the singletrack trails are marked super well, but they are easy to navigate since there aren't a ton of turns. Most of the trails are short and flat, so they're usually easy for most hikers.

The Uncle Frank Trail and Liberty Loop intersect at the road leading to this small boat launch and picnic area. This is a great starting or stopping (or turnaround) spot on a hike. There are great views of Fellows Lake from the grassy area near the parking lot. Plus, there are restrooms, a small pavilion, and a couple picnic tables here.
