A row of posts in the water reduces wave action in the shore area of the nature reserve and promotes reed growth in the shallow water. Cormorants like to dry their wings here, and various species of gulls can also be found here. Overall, the Dümmer, with its surrounding meadows and pastures, is one of the most important habitats for animal and plant species in Lower Saxony. After the last Ice Age, around 10,000 years ago, the deeper layers of soil also thawed. In areas with abundant ice and little sand, the ground subsided and filled with water. Dümmer Lake is a great place to cool off. You can also cycle around it and there are some lovely places to stop for a break.
