Path through the forest from Wizardbeach to Redfrogbeach, if at all only with plenty of time and not before dark! We almost got lost there because the route wasn't obvious. (March 2023)

Bring mask and snorkel. They also sell coconuts and cut them open for you. Best is to go as far east as possible on that beach.

This hotel is one of the most unusual I've seen so far. It is just a few kilometers from Bocas del Toro, actually in the middle of the jungle, in Big Creek, next to Via Playa Bluff. The owner bought a piece of jungle, cleared it and created a beautiful garden with buildings and a swimming pool. The hosts are called José (from Seville) and Maira (not Maria! - from Venezuela), are very friendly and take great care of their guests. In particular, they are also happy to explain what plants and animals there are here. Although I was only there for two days, I was able to marvel at a sloth, a capuchin monkey, hummingbirds and a small gecko from relatively close. I couldn't remember the names of all the beautiful flowers, shrubs and trees. I was glad I hadn't taken a hotel in town...

Further up the coast from Playa El Istmito and Sand Dollar Beach, about halfway to Playa Bluff, is Playa Punch (or Paunch), which is dangerous for swimming but good for surfing. It's about 5km from Bocas town. There are boards for rent and a small hotel/restaurant with a bar offers beach chairs and drinks on the beach

Beautiful Bocas-Bluff Beach Beer Biking BBBBBB Bocas on Isla Colón is heaven for relaxed travelers; there's really no reason to do anything other than enjoy life. Everything in this sleepy "fastest growing tourism"(?!?) town is walkable, and several deserted paradise/surf playas a walk or bikeride away. Playa Bluff is a 5 km long wilderness beach with strong surf and soft yellow sand. Small boats from Bocas take you snorkeling/diving and explore the Isla Bastimentos national park and uninhabited coral islands all around. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bocas_Town,_Bocas_del_Toro More annotated pictures at https://www.komoot.de/tour/10971766

For calm, clear waters ideal for swimming and relaxation, consider Pola Beach, known for its snorkeling and fresh coconut vendors. Other excellent options include Starfish Beach (Playa Estrella) on Isla Colón, famous for its abundant starfish, and Boca del Drago, also on Isla Colón, which offers tranquil, palm-lined shores. Red Frog Beach on Isla Bastimentos is popular for both swimming and sunbathing, while the pristine Cayos Zapatillas provide a more secluded escape.

Dolphin Bay is a sanctuary for dolphins, while Bird Island (Isla Pajaros) is a significant nesting site for various bird species, including the red-billed tropicbird. The Bastimentos National Marine Park protects extensive coral reefs teeming with marine life, and its rainforests are home to sloths and red poison dart frogs. The Villa Sevilla Hotel Jungle Garden also offers close encounters with sloths, capuchin monkeys, and hummingbirds.
To immerse yourself in local culture, visit Bocas Town on Isla Colón, the vibrant hub for restaurants, artisan shops, and cultural events. On Isla Bastimentos, the authentic Afro-Caribbean community of Old Bank offers a glimpse into local traditions through its music, dances, and food. Remote Ngäbe indigenous villages like Salt Creek and Popa 2 provide opportunities to learn about preserved traditions, rhythmic dances, and magnificent handicrafts. You can also engage in agro-tourism by taking Cacao Farm Tours to learn about chocolate making from bean to bar.

The remote Ngäbe indigenous villages like Salt Creek and Popa 2 offer a truly authentic cultural experience away from the main tourist areas. For nature lovers, the Cueva de Murcielagos (Bat Cave) provides an adventurous exploration opportunity. The trail connecting Wizard Beach and Red Frog Beach, though sometimes challenging, offers a chance to spot red frogs in their natural habitat.
Bocas Del Toro generally experiences good weather year-round, but the drier months from February to April and September to October are often considered ideal. During these periods, you'll find less rain and calmer seas, which are perfect for beach activities, snorkeling, diving, and island hopping. However, the region's tropical climate means short, intense rain showers can occur at any time.
Given the tropical climate, light, breathable clothing like shorts, t-shirts, and swimwear are essential. Don't forget a hat, sunglasses, and reef-safe sunscreen for sun protection. For exploring trails or visiting indigenous villages, comfortable walking shoes or sandals are recommended. If you plan on hiking through the jungle, insect repellent is a must. A light rain jacket or poncho is also advisable due to occasional tropical showers. For snorkeling or diving, bring your own gear if you prefer, though rentals are widely available.
Absolutely! Bocas Del Toro is renowned for its excellent snorkeling and diving opportunities. The Bastimentos National Marine Park is a highlight, boasting extensive coral reefs with over 95% of the Caribbean's coral species, offering superb visibility and diverse marine life. Cayos Zapatillas also feature vibrant coral reefs perfect for snorkeling. Pola Beach and Boca del Drago are also great spots for snorkeling in calm waters. Many local tour operators offer guided snorkeling and diving excursions to these prime locations.
