Dam at Lake Łąka

Highlight (Segment) • Monument

The Łąka reservoir (the so-called Łąka Lake) - an artificial reservoir was created in 1987 as a result of the construction of a dam on the Pszczynka River, 3 kilometers west of Pszczyna.
The earth dam is 1130 meters long, the dam is 6 meters high, the surface of the reservoir is 3.53 km² and its total capacity is 11.15 million m³, the length of the reservoir is 3.6 kilometers, the average width is 700 meters, the maximum depth is 3.5 meters.
The tasks of the reservoir include, among others, reducing the risk of flooding, i.e. equalizing the flows on the Pszczynka River, supplying industrial water to the mines of the Rybnik Region Węgłowy RÓW. It is also an equalizing reservoir for the nearby Goczałkowickie Lake and creating conditions for recreation and relaxation.

Access to the vicinity of the front dam is hassle-free, the dam is open to cyclists and pedestrians. It is worse with driving along dirt roads along the reservoir because some of them are in poor condition with potholes. Lake Łąka is a great place for rest and recreation. During weekends, in the summer time of the year, it is difficult to find silence over the reservoir (a swimming pool, a lot of anglers and water scooters).
The largest beach is in the town of Łąka, there is also a yacht marina with water equipment rentals available; boats, kayaks, pedal boats and even windsurf boards. There are also football and beach volleyball fields within the swimming pool area. The Water Sports Center in Łąka, where there is also a campsite and places for barbecues or bonfires, there is a guarded municipal bathing area, and in summer there are even floating jetties, which have created a special swimming pool where you can walk.

Babczyna Dolina Nature Reserve

Highlight • Natural Monument

The main part of the reserve, with an area of almost 76 ha, is located in the Radostowice forestry in the Kobiór Forest Inspectorate, in the center of the Kobiórski forests, where biocenotic systems characteristic of river valleys are protected in the upper course of Korzeniec Południowy. The subject of protection here are, among others: reed forest patches, sphagnum alder forest, forest reed complex, riparian forest, i.e. forest communities formed under the influence of stagnant waters, where no economic activities are carried out.

The South Korzenic on the Pszczyna Plain is one of the few watercourses that has resisted the negative impact of anthropopressure while preserving rare vegetation. The greatest wealth of "Babczyna Dolina" is the bryoflora, i.e. a huge number of bryophytes - 61, and liverworts - 20. This is a sensation in the Pszczyna-Kobiórski managed forests dominated by pine monoculture, but also on the map of the Silesian Voivodeship there are not many such places.

Goczałkowice-Zdrój railway stop

Highlight • Monument

The railway bridge and the station were built in the 1870s. The station was located on the Warsaw-Vienna railroad, and the first train passed through Goczałkowice on June 24, 1870.
The building fulfilled its role until the beginning of the 21st century, when ticket offices and waiting rooms were closed due to the increasing number of homeless people. In 2013, the historic station was transferred to the Goczałkowice-Zdrój commune. In mid-2015, the renovation of the building was completed. A Tourist Service Center was opened there. In November 2020, the station was named the Railway Station of the Year 2020.

Goczałkowickie Lake (Goczałkowicki Reservoir) - a dam reservoir on the Vistula, created in 1956 by damming river waters with the dam in Goczałkowice-Zdrój in the Silesian Voivodeship. The maximum area of the reservoir is 3200 ha, and the total capacity is about 168 million m³. The dam is 2,980 m long. It is a retention reservoir supplying water to a part of the Upper Silesian Industrial District, providing 38% of treated surface water for Górnośląskie Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągów S.A. in Katowice.
In addition to water supply, it also performs retention and economic functions (fisheries).
The vicinity of the reservoir is a breeding ground for many bird species. The area of the reservoir is in the prohibition zone, with no entry to its area. The dam crown has been made available for pedestrians and cyclists, creating a "walking part" connecting Goczałkowice-Zdrój with Zabrzeg, thanks to which the area of the Goczałkowice reservoir has become a recreational place.

Tips from the Community

From a tourist point of view, the dam is three kilometers of a straight as an arrow, smooth, asphalt path running along the crown of the entire structure. It is precisely thanks to this smooth asphalt and the nice views that it has become a place of recreation for many residents of Zabrze, Goczałkowice, Pszczyna, and even more distant towns in the Pszczyna and Bielsko districts. Runners and inline skaters dominate here, there are many walkers, but there is no shortage of cyclists either. The lake itself, although artificially created in the 1950s, resembles a natural lake, so the views from the dam are nice.

"The most beautiful railway station in Poland" may be an exaggeration, but the station building is worth noting, as it's an example of skillfully adapted to modern needs and an exception to the fairly common trend until recently of such buildings first falling into disrepair because no one cares about them, and then being demolished. The Goczałkowice Zdrój stop itself is a convenient starting or ending point for a trip to Lake Goczałkowickie or the Vistula Cycle Route. Especially since there's a restaurant by the nearby pond and two or three others in the nearby spa park – though admittedly, these aren't exactly high-class establishments (with the possible exception of "Kogut i Kurki," where both the interior and the menu are decent). And while waiting for your train, weather permitting, you can admire the sunset colors of the sky and their reflection in the pond.
