🌾 Velen Castle Mill – A Witness to Medieval Economy The Velen Castle Mill is located just steps from the castle and originally belonged to the estate of the Lords of Velen. Its origins date back to the late Middle Ages, probably the 13th or 14th century, when it was part of the economic infrastructure of the castle complex. The mill served to supply the castle and the surrounding population. Farmers from the surrounding area were obligated to have their grain milled here – this so-called milling obligation ensured the mill's operation. The water from the castle's moats and tributaries was used as the power source. With the expansion of the castle in the 17th and 18th centuries, the mill was also modernized several times and remained in operation until the 19th century. It was thus an important component of the regional economic system and symbolically represented the self-sufficiency and protective function of medieval manor houses. Today, the old castle mill has been lovingly restored and is part of the historic ensemble of Velen Castle and Park – a tranquil place where history and nature meet. --- 💡 Tip: A detour from the castle trail to the old mill is worthwhile – especially in the morning when mist hangs over the moats. From there, you have a beautiful view of the waterways and the back of the castle.
