PR1 Vereda do Areeiro is without a doubt one of the most spectacular and challenging mountain trails on Madeira, as it connects the two highest peaks of the island: Pico do Areeiro and Pico Ruivo. The path winds at almost eight hundred thousand meters above sea level over narrow ridges, through tunnels carved into the rocks, and along dizzying precipices. A fun fact is that along the way you pass the Ninho da Manta, the buzzard's nest, where the rare and endangered Zino's petrel breeds against the steep rock faces. Because the trail is high in the central mountain range, you often walk literally above the clouds here, which at sunrise creates an almost otherworldly spectacle of golden light on the volcanic peaks.

Not for people afraid of the dark and confined spaces. Light is very important! Best to bring a flashlight!

Breathtaking views from the hiking trail. Fortunately, ropes are attached to the boundary posts, which many hikers gladly use. Whether going uphill or downhill, they simply provide a sense of security.

This viewpoint is also worth seeing for sunrise. However, the path from the parking lot at Rio Arieiro to the start of the Ninho da Manta trail was completely icy when we were there. It only became passable once the sun thawed the ice.

Another highlight along the route. However, immediately afterward, the path is blocked by an iron gate. The path has collapsed, and there was a forest fire. According to unconfirmed reports, it is scheduled to reopen in the summer of 2026.

From the viewpoint overlooking Boca da Encumeada, a panorama unfolds across the lush green mountain ridges and deep valleys of the island's interior. On a clear day, you can see the mountain pass, the surrounding peaks, and often even wisps of clouds drifting across the ridge. The spot is perfect for a short break with photos, deep breaths of fresh mountain air, and a first glimpse of the rugged beauty of the central massif.
