The Witthus association is renovating the completely dilapidated Wittekindsburg and turning it into a jewel! Simply hike or cycle there, there is food and drink on site and you support courageous people with an incredible amount of creativity. Culture and events also take place there. Highly recommended!

The moated castle Ulenburg near Löhne is very beautiful and probably even more beautiful when the sun is shining. The castle has a small park with benches where you can have a little picnic.

Vlotho Castle

Highlight • Castle

The castle ruins are still preserved with the ring wall. Today, there is a Spanish restaurant with a large beer garden in the castle complex. Be sure to stop by! Very good view of the Weser valley.

It's not a lookout tower, but I find it interesting. You find it next to the road near Waldemeine. Because there are a lot of trees and bushes around the tower, it's not easy to see it. The path is also a bit overgrown. It's not that easy to get there by bike. You can't go up the tower because there's no door.

The round tower, built from rubble stones, has a high entrance, now walled up, and several loopholes. The remaining tower ruins are listed as historical monuments. The exact age is unknown. It was probably built in the second half of the 15th century as a watchtower for the Salzufler Landwehr. With the help of light and smoke signals, the city could be warned early about approaching enemies. Probably in 1632, during the Thirty Years' War, the tower was destroyed in an attack and has remained in ruins since then.

The Bustedt estate is a moated castle that was founded in 1415 by the knight Heinrich von Ledebur. However, he placed this on the land of the Herford women's monastery, which led to a feud that he lost. The castle, which was secured with several moats, passed to the House of Ravensberg just four years later and was managed by different families. When it lost its military importance, Gut Bustedt was converted into a moated castle. Today the facility is used by the community of Hiddenhausen as a biology center. Around the moated castle there are several animal enclosures for goats and poultry, ponds and even a herb and kitchen garden. The estate can also be visited from the inside on Sundays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is when the aquarium enthusiasts meet and maintain several beautiful aquariums in the residential tower. Anyone who uses the front entrance can at least see it through the glazed door. The wooden door of the residential tower can be opened to allow a view. In between, Gut Bustedt can also be visited at other times.
