A fortified settlement dating back to the Bronze Age, this hill fort is among the best preserved in the entire Karst. Surrounded by two imposing walls, still perfectly identifiable, you can still see some emplacements built during the First World War by the Austrian Imperial Army.

Near Štanjel lies the Austro-Hungarian military cemetery, where Austro-Hungarian soldiers and Russian prisoners of war who died in the nearby military hospital in Štanjel Castle and the auxiliary hospital facilities in the area are buried. Architect Joseph Ulrich had already drawn up a plan for the architectural arrangement of the cemetery during the Isonzo Front, which he completed with a magnificent temple, but the work was not completed until 1918. According to the Italian authorities, who led the excavation of military cemeteries in the 1930s, 1,315 soldiers are buried here.
