Not sure I have ever seen inside this building, as I'm usually here in the late fall or winter

I always like to hike down and see this old cabin foundation and chimney. It's right across the river from where the river tour boats land on the MN side.

Beach changing building plus beach. On a day like today it looked nice to jump in.

I have not been in this building, but it's a neat building for sure.

Probably one of the most highly trafficked of the Minnesota's State Parks. Worth at least the short walk around the potholes, and check out more of the park or the Wisconsin side which is much bigger.

Milltown makes a great pit stop if you're hiking through Polk County. The small-town centre has a handful of places to refuel, whether you're in the mood for a slice of pizza, a strong cup of coffee, or a hearty pub meal. Just a short drive away, Balsam Lake Brewery & Market is worth checking out—especially if you’re after local produce, baked goods, or craft beer.

Dogs are generally welcome on most trails in the St. Croix Falls area, including those in Interstate State Park, provided they are kept on a leash no longer than 8 feet at all times. However, they are typically not permitted in buildings, picnic areas, or on beaches. It's always a good practice to check the specific regulations for the park you plan to visit before you go.
The glacial potholes are one of the region's most unique geological features. They are deep, cylindrical holes drilled into the hard basalt rock by swirling meltwater from ancient glaciers. The best place to see them is within Interstate State Park, which has some of the deepest potholes in the world. The short and accessible Pothole Trail offers fantastic, up-close views of these formations and the St. Croix River gorge.
Each season offers a unique experience. Summer is perfect for hiking combined with paddling on the St. Croix River. However, autumn is particularly spectacular, as the hardwood forests along the river bluffs erupt in vibrant colors, making it a favorite time for many hikers. Spring offers pleasant temperatures and blooming wildflowers, while winter provides opportunities for snowshoeing on the trails.
Yes, for those seeking a more strenuous adventure, the St. Croix Falls area has some rewarding challenges. The western terminus of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail is located here, offering a moderately challenging hike with significant elevation changes through Interstate Park and along the river. For a long-distance challenge, the Swedish Immigrant Trail provides a lengthy route for a full day of hiking.
The hiking scene is centered around several key areas. Interstate State Park is the premier destination, a highly-rated park famous for its dramatic river gorge, glacial potholes, and extensive trail system. The St. Croix National Scenic Riverway provides the backdrop for many hikes, with paths running alongside the water. For a different experience, the St. Croix Falls Segment of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a popular choice, offering a well-regarded section of the thousand-mile trail.
Both parks offer stunning views of the St. Croix Dalles, but from different perspectives. The Wisconsin side is renowned for its up-close views of the glacial potholes and features trails like the Pothole Trail and Eagle Peak Trail that climb the eastern bluffs. The Minnesota side, also highly rated, provides more extensive views looking across the river at the cliffs and is known for its rock climbing areas. Many visitors enjoy hiking both sides to get the full experience of the river gorge.
The area is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.6 stars. Hikers frequently praise the dramatic scenery of the St. Croix River gorge, the unique geological formations like the potholes, and the well-maintained trail network within Interstate State Park. The mix of riverside paths, woodland trails, and rocky bluff climbs is often highlighted as a major appeal.
Yes, the area is famous for its overlooks. Within Wisconsin's Interstate State Park, the Summit Rock Trail and Eagle Peak Trail both lead to high points on the bluffs, offering spectacular panoramic views of the St. Croix River gorge and the surrounding valley. These spots are especially popular during the fall foliage season.
Interstate State Park has several designated parking lots near major trailheads, including lots for the Pothole Trail, the beach area at Lake O' the Dalles, and the Summit Rock Trail. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required for entry. Parking can fill up quickly on weekends and holidays, so arriving early is recommended.
