Impressive view of the Triberg waterfalls

The Triberg Waterfalls are one of the most beautiful sights in the Black Forest and Baden-Württemberg. The water streams, which run over seven cascades, are considered the highest waterfalls in Germany with a total height of 163 meters. This is why they are also a popular destination for a vacation with children. We visited the Triberg waterfalls on a summer evening. And - to our surprise - we got there without paying an entrance fee. In this article, we reveal why this was the case and what you should know about opening times, entrance fees, parking and hiking options. First of all, you should keep in mind that the Triberg waterfalls are very well known and well visited. Around 27,100 people search for them every month on Google alone (as of May 2023). Therefore, it is often full during the day. This is especially true when the weather is nice, on weekends, public holidays and school holidays. Since we don't think you can really enjoy the beauty of the waterfalls in the middle of crowds, we recommend visiting outside of peak times. Before 9:00 a.m. or in the evening from around 7:00 p.m. you will find the waterfalls pleasantly empty. Another plus point for visiting in the morning or evening: you save money. The ticket booths are closed early in the morning and in the evening. This means you can get to the Triberg Waterfalls outside of the typical visiting hours without paying an entrance fee. And the parking is free too! The Scheffelplatz parking lot (Google Maps) at the middle entrance, for example, is only chargeable between 9:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. https://www.unaufschiebbar.de/reiseziele/europa/deutschland/triberger-wasserfaelle-schwarzwald/

The Black Forest is known for its abundance of waterfalls. The reason for this lies in the large differences in altitude over a short distance, which applies in particular to the topographical situation in the Simonswald valley. In the 300-700 meter sloping western side of the valley, the strong Ice Age glaciations have created cirque walls. The neighboring streams Hirschbach and Zweribach, coming from gently undulating hanging valleys, plunge down into the largest of these cirques, more than 300 meters deep, with several waterfalls, of which only the Zweribach waterfalls are known nationwide. The cirque is protected as a protective forest and as a Zweribach nature reserve.

Wild and romantic gorge, thanks in large part to its status as part of the protected forest.

Impressive falls, especially after a lot of rain, of course. When it is wet, however, be careful when stepping on roots or stones: Danger of slipping!

Yes, the Triberg Waterfalls are known for their well-developed paths, making them accessible even for inexperienced hikers. While some physical condition is helpful, the trails are generally considered easy to navigate.
For those seeking a more challenging experience, the paths to Zweribach Waterfalls and Hirschbach Waterfall are described as more demanding. The Zweribach trail can be stony, narrow, and slippery, requiring sturdy shoes. The Hirschbach path is a natural, unpaved, and steep trail, best for sure-footed nature lovers.
Parking is generally available near popular waterfall attractions. For instance, the Triberg Waterfalls are located right next to the center of Triberg, suggesting nearby parking options. For more remote waterfalls like Zweribach, you might find designated parking areas at the start of the hiking trails.
Yes, some waterfalls are family-friendly. The Triberg Waterfalls are explicitly categorized as family-friendly, with well-developed paths suitable for a family outing. Always check the specific trail conditions for other waterfalls, as some can be more challenging.
While the waterfalls are beautiful year-round, winter conditions can make some trails slippery and more challenging. For example, the path to Zweribach Waterfalls is known to be partially overflowing with water and slippery at times, which would be exacerbated in winter. Sturdy, waterproof shoes and caution are highly recommended for winter visits.
The Simonswald region is rich in natural beauty. You'll encounter dense forests, especially 'Bannwald' (protected forest) areas like those surrounding Zweribach Waterfall and Bannwald Forest, where nature develops undisturbed. Expect mossy trees, rocks, and fallen trees, creating a mystical and unique natural experience.
Beyond waterfall viewing, the Simonswald area offers diverse outdoor activities. You can explore numerous running trails, such as the 'Schwedenschanze Inn loop' or the 'Günterfelsen – Brend Tower loop'. There are also mountain hikes, including routes like 'View from the Kandel – Kandel Summit Viewpoint loop'. For road cycling enthusiasts, routes like 'View of the Black Forest Hills – Hexenlochmühle loop' are available. You can find more details on these activities in the Running Trails around Simonswald, Mountain Hikes around Simonswald, and Road Cycling Routes around Simonswald guides.
While the guide highlights popular spots, the region has 17 distinct waterfalls. The Hirschbach Waterfall, surrounded by untouched Bannwald and accessed via a small, narrow, and steep natural path, offers a more secluded and magical experience for true nature lovers.
Visitors frequently praise the impressive natural spectacle and the mystical atmosphere, especially in areas like the Zweribach Waterfalls. The feeling of being immersed in untouched nature, with mossy trees and unique forest landscapes, is a common highlight. Many appreciate the adventure of the trails and the rewarding views.
While specific regulations for each waterfall vary, many natural trails in the Black Forest region are dog-friendly, provided dogs are kept on a leash. For example, the well-developed paths at Triberg Waterfalls are generally suitable for dogs. For more challenging trails, ensure your dog is accustomed to rough terrain.
The waterfalls are beautiful throughout the year. Spring and autumn offer lush greenery and vibrant fall colors, respectively, often with good water flow. Summer provides a cool escape, especially in shaded forest areas like the Zweribach Waterfalls. Winter offers a unique, often frozen landscape, but requires more caution due to potentially slippery conditions.
