Platte Hunting Lodge

Highlight • Historical Site

The hunting lodge has since been elaborately renovated into an event location and looks very beautiful, but I also remember the ruin from my childhood. Right next to the castle is a great restaurant with really delicious food. In summer, a small hut is also open – it offers snacks as well as beer and soft drinks. A mini-golf course, a children's playground, and a barbecue hut are also available. Furthermore, the plateau is a good starting point for many great tours/routes. Some trails are also available.

September 22, 2026, Falkenstein Castle Ruins

The Falkenstein castle ruins (historically also called Neu-Falkenstein) are located at an altitude of around 450 meters in the Falkenstein district of Königstein in the Taunus region. It is considered a striking landmark, visible from afar, and boasts a turbulent history. The fortress was built in the mid-14th century by the Lords of Bolanden-Falkenstein immediately next to the older foundations of Nürings Castle and was first mentioned in a document in 1364. After a rapid succession of various noble families – including the Counts of Nassau and Cronberg – the complex underwent a comprehensive modernization phase around the year 1500. During this time, modern defensive structures, two cannon towers, and the 18-meter-high keep, preserved to this day in the distinctive "butter barrel" style, were erected. After the Thirty Years' War, the fortification gradually lost its strategic importance. From around 1780 onwards, it was finally abandoned and gradually fell into ruin, as parts of the buildings were used as a quarry. The deliberate demolition of the historic walls could only be stopped in 1842. Since 1945, the protected area has been owned by the municipality (now the town of Königstein) and has since been continuously maintained and renovated with significant financial commitment from the local historical society. Today, the castle's elevated core is a popular excursion destination, offering visitors during the opening months (March to October) an impressive panoramic view over the Rhine-Main plain and the Taunus.

The restaurant has 60 seats in the restaurant, 30-35 seats in the extra room and 25 seats in the garden.

The building was originally built around 1255 as the lower gate of Königstein Castle. On July 22, 1655, the town received the building free of charge from the sovereign, the Archbishop of Mainz, Johann Philipp von Schönborn. The destruction of the Thirty Years' War had caused the house to deteriorate to the point that only the massive substructure could be used. The current building was built on this basement in half-timbered construction. It was completed in 1673 and was used as the town hall until 1909. The Königstein Castle and Town Museum has been housed in the old town hall since 1968. The museum deals with the historical development of the region and the town of Königstein. Finds, models, drawings, pictures, tools, coins and everyday objects from many centuries up to the present day are on display. Source: Wikipedia

The property consists of two half-timbered houses supposedly built in 1654 and restored after 1792 and a solidly constructed front building (formerly the Messer Inn) built in 1870. Bordered to the west by the Höhenbach. Source: https://denkxweb.denkmalpflege-hessen.de/100780/

Can I visit the Hexenturm in Idstein, and what can I expect?

Yes, the Hexenturm (Witches' Tower) in Idstein is open to visitors. You can climb its 165 steps to the top for wonderful panoramic views over the town, extending to the Großer Feldberg and the Goldener Grund. During the season (March to October), it's open on Saturdays and Sundays. Alternatively, you can borrow a key from the Tourist Information office during opening hours for independent access, provided no guided tours are taking place. Despite its name, there's no evidence of witch trial prisoners here, though a plaque commemorates victims of the 1676 witch trials in Idstein.

Are there family-friendly castles to visit near Idstein?

Yes, several castles in the region are suitable for families. The Königstein castle ruins are a great option, often hosting knights' tournaments in the summer months. Kronberg Old Town, with its castle complex and charming alleys, also offers a pleasant family outing. The Platte Hunting Lodge, while not a traditional castle, is family-friendly and a good starting point for walks.

What are some of the best viewpoints from castles in the Idstein area?

For spectacular views, visit the Königstein castle ruins, which offer fantastic vistas over the Rhine-Main plain and the Taunus forests. The Ruins of Falkenstein Castle also provide spectacular views over the rolling hills of the Taunus. In Idstein itself, climbing the Hexenturm rewards you with panoramic views over the entire town and beyond.

What kind of architecture can I expect to see at Idstein Castle?

Idstein Castle showcases a fascinating blend of medieval and Renaissance architecture. Originally a hill castle from around 1170, it was transformed into a Renaissance-style palace (Schloss Idstein) in the early 17th century. You'll find surviving parts of the original 12th-century castle, such as the Hexenturm, alongside the grander Renaissance *schloss* with Baroque interiors, including the 'Emperor Chamber' with stucco work and ceiling paintings.

Are there any unique historical experiences or features at the castles?

At Idstein Castle, you can find a small Renaissance garden where guided tours are offered with guides dressed as gardeners from 1702, providing an immersive historical experience. Eppstein Castle, which houses a city and castle museum, also hosts an annual castle festival.

What is the significance of the Hexenturm's name?

The Hexenturm (Witches' Tower) is Idstein's most recognizable landmark, but its name is somewhat misleading. It became popular in the 19th century through a literary work, and there is no evidence that individuals accused of witchcraft were ever imprisoned there. However, Idstein was indeed the site of significant witch trials in 1676, during which 31 women and 8 men were executed. A plaque at the base of the tower commemorates the victims of these trials.

Can I find any restored castles or palaces in the area?

While many sites are ruins, Idstein Castle itself is a prime example of a transformed structure. Originally a medieval hill castle, it was rebuilt into the Renaissance-style Schloss Idstein in the early 17th century, serving as a residence for the Counts of Nassau-Idstein. Today, it houses a school but retains its historical grandeur.

What do visitors particularly enjoy about the castles around Idstein?

Visitors frequently appreciate the stunning panoramic views from the castle ruins, such as those at Königstein and Falkenstein.
