You shouldn't jump into the water from here, as you might hit your head on the rocks.

A remarkable natural spectacle, accessible via an easy hike, partly along wooden plank paths. Direct access is prohibited.

Good running route and lots of fresh air, preferably early in the morning.

This is a great lookout point, and a good turnaround point if you're only out for a day hike and don't want to hike down the switchbacks to the bottom of the crater. But if you're up for hiking just a little more there's another great viewpoint, Rainbow Bridge, where you can soak up more views and not have to climb very far back up the wall of the crater.

This is a wonderful drive on an excellent road up to 3060 m altitude. We drove partly through clouds and short before the summit it cleared up and we got awarded with an outstanding view around the island.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need reservations or permits for hiking in Maui?

Yes, some popular areas require advance reservations. For instance, visiting Haleakalā National Park for sunrise requires a booking, and entry to Waiʻānapanapa State Park (home of the black sand beach) must also be reserved. Always check the official park websites for the most current requirements before you go.

What are some good hikes for beginners or families?

For a very accessible and scenic walk, the Wailea Oceanfront Boardwalk is a paved coastal path perfect for all ages. Another great option is the Kaʻanapali Beach Path, which offers beautiful ocean views along a popular stretch of coastline.

Which trails are best for seeing waterfalls?

Maui is famous for its waterfalls, especially along the Road to Hāna. The Waimoku Falls via Pīpīwai Trail is a must-do, leading you through a bamboo forest to the base of the spectacular 400-foot Waimoku Falls. Many other shorter trails along the Hāna Highway also lead to stunning falls like Twin Falls.

Are there any challenging hikes in Maui County?

Yes, for a strenuous but rewarding experience, consider the Keoneheʻeheʻe (Sliding Sands) Trail Loop to Bottomless Pit. This long and difficult hike takes you deep into the otherworldly volcanic landscape of Haleakalā crater, involving significant elevation change at high altitude.

What kind of scenery can I expect inside Haleakalā crater?

Hiking in Haleakalā crater is like stepping onto another planet. The landscape is dominated by volcanic features, including colorful cinder cones and vast, sandy plains. Trails like the Keonehe‘ehe‘e (Sliding Sands) Trail to Split Rock offer an immersive experience in this unique, high-altitude desert environment. You might also spot the rare ʻĀhinahina (silversword) plant, which grows nowhere else on Earth.

What should I wear for hiking in Maui?

Your clothing will depend on the trail. For coastal and rainforest hikes, wear light, breathable clothing and sturdy walking shoes. For high-altitude hikes in Haleakalā, you must bring layers, including a warm jacket, hat, and gloves, as temperatures can be near freezing. Rain gear is always a good idea, as weather can change quickly.

How many hiking trails are there in Maui County?

There are over 170 hiking routes to explore across Maui County. The network covers everything from easy coastal walks and lush rainforest paths to challenging volcanic crater treks, offering options for every skill level.

What do other hikers think of the trails in Maui County?

The region is highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.7 stars. Hikers frequently praise the incredible diversity of the landscapes, from the volcanic terrain of Haleakalā to the lush, waterfall-filled rainforests.

Are there any good forest hikes away from the coast?

Absolutely. The Kahakapao Loop Trail in the Makawao Forest Reserve offers a wonderful change of scenery. This moderately difficult loop takes you through shady forests of eucalyptus and pine trees in Upcountry Maui, providing a cooler, quieter hiking experience.

What is the Waiheʻe Ridge Trail like?

The Waiheʻe Ridge Trail is a popular and challenging out-and-back hike in the West Maui Mountains. It's known for its steep initial climb and stunning panoramic views of the island's central valley, coastline, and lush green gorges. Be prepared for muddy conditions, especially after rain.

Can you recommend a good coastal hike over lava fields?

The Hoapili Trail at La Perouse Bay is an excellent choice. This trail traverses a rugged, historic lava flow along the southern coastline. It's a hot and exposed hike, so go early, but you'll be rewarded with dramatic ocean views, unique geological formations, and a sense of Maui's raw, volcanic power.

Are there any easy, scenic walks in the West Maui area?

The Kapalua Coastal Trail is a fantastic option. It's a well-maintained path that winds along the stunning coastline, passing by several beautiful beaches like Kapalua Bay and D.T. Fleming Beach. It offers incredible ocean vistas with minimal effort.
