For me, this section of the valley has a southern Alpine character thanks to the Swiss stone pines.

Waterfall from the Middle Murgsee to the Lower Murgsee The stream babbles along the edge of the forest and sings its eternal song. It brings me joy from the rock face, thank you, I love you so much. Text Kurt Küng 2001

Middle Murgsee 1808 m Murg lakes (Upper Murgsee / Middle Murgsee / Lower Murgsee) Three mountain lake pearls in the Murg Valley (Upper Murgsee / Middle Murgsee / Lower Murgsee) in Eastern Switzerland SG / GL The three Murg lakes are nestled in a wild, romantic valley basin. The lower Murgsee is in the middle of a protected pine reserve, the scenery is reminiscent of the wilderness of Canada. Between the middle and upper Murgsee is the Murgsee mountain inn, which accommodates not only hikers but also fishermen. The Murgsee trout are known for their pink, salmon-like flesh. The shortest, best and easiest way to Murgsee leads via Murg on Lake Walen, on the Zurich - Chur route, either by car or the Murgtal bus (register for bus trips with Taxi Walensee, Tel. 079 735 30 00) to the Mornen car park (P2) at around 1200 m above sea level. The route via Murg is well signposted. From Mornen, a natural gravel path approx. 1.5 m wide leads directly to the Murgsee mountain restaurant at 1825 m above sea level. The hike takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. The Murgsee - Mürtschen area circular hike is particularly recommended, with the starting point being the Merlen car park (P1) in the Murgtal. The hiking trails are well marked and are also suitable for hikers with little experience. Berggasthaus Murgsee at 1818 m The restaurant at the upper Murgsee is open during the summer and autumn seasons. The house has always retained its simple and rustic character. It serves as a summer season mountain restaurant and is mainly a rest stop for hikers or sport fishermen who seek relaxation by the crystal-clear waters. Description Here you can eat very well and relax overnight in a cozy shared room for the next day (pre-reservation for overnight stay recommended). You can reach the inn in 2 to 6 hours walking time from Murg or Maschgenkamm (Flumserberg). https://www.myswitzerland.com/de-ch/unterkuenfte/berggasthaus-murgsee/ http://www.schweizer-bergseen.ch/st.gallen/quarten/murgseen/restaurant-murgsee.html

The mountaineering routes in the Oberer Murgsee region are predominantly challenging. Out of around a dozen available routes, 12 are classified as difficult, with only one moderate option. This area is best suited for experienced mountaineers seeking demanding ascents and rugged alpine terrain.
Yes, many of the routes around Oberer Murgsee are designed as loops, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. For example, the Guggli Bridge – Murgsee loop from Bachlaui is a popular circular option, as is the Gufelstock Summit – Schwarzstöckli (2,383 m) loop from Aeugsten.
Mountaineering routes in this region vary significantly in length and duration. You can find routes ranging from about 9.7 km, like the Ibexes in Glarus – Schwarzstöckli (2,383 m) loop from Aeugsten which takes around 5 hours, to longer expeditions such as the Alp Robmen – Ruchen Summit loop from Kerenzerberg, covering 22.9 km and requiring about 11 hours.
The Oberer Murgsee region is primarily characterized by difficult mountaineering routes with significant elevation gains and rugged terrain. There are no easy routes, and only one moderate option. Therefore, it is generally not recommended for beginner mountaineers or families with young children unless they have considerable alpine experience and are well-equipped.
The best time for mountaineering in the Oberer Murgsee region is typically during the summer months, from late June to early October. During this period, snow has usually melted from higher elevations, and weather conditions are generally more stable, offering clearer paths and better visibility for summit ascents.
Many alpine trails in Switzerland, including those around Oberer Murgsee, are generally dog-friendly, provided your dog is well-behaved, on a leash, and accustomed to challenging mountain terrain. However, always check local regulations for specific routes or protected areas, and be mindful of livestock and wildlife. Ensure your dog has adequate water and is physically capable of the strenuous climbs.
While the high alpine environment around Oberer Murgsee is remote, you may find mountain huts (Alpenhütten) or small alpine restaurants (Berggasthäuser) in some valleys or at the end of certain routes, especially during peak season. These often offer simple meals and refreshments. It's always advisable to carry sufficient food and water for your entire tour, as facilities can be sparse.
Given the difficult nature of the routes, essential gear includes sturdy mountaineering boots, appropriate layered clothing for varying weather conditions, rain and wind protection, a map and compass or GPS device, sufficient water and food, a first-aid kit, and sun protection. Depending on the specific route and time of year, trekking poles, crampons, or an ice axe might also be necessary.
The mountaineering routes in Oberer Murgsee are highly regarded by the komoot community, with an impressive average rating of 4.9 stars from over 20 reviews. Mountaineers frequently praise the challenging ascents, the stunning alpine vistas, and the rugged, untouched beauty of the glacial lakes and high peaks.
Access to the more remote trailheads in the Oberer Murgsee region can be limited by public transport. While some valleys might have bus services, many starting points for challenging mountaineering routes often require private vehicle access. It's recommended to research specific trailhead access points and public transport schedules in advance, especially for routes like the Guggli Bridge loop from Bachlaui or those starting from Aeugsten or Kerenzerberg.
The routes themselves traverse a landscape rich in natural beauty. You'll encounter features like the iconic Guggli Bridge, which is part of several loops, and the stunning glacial lakes of the Murgsee area. The region is also known for its high peaks such as Gufelstock and Schwarzstöckli, offering expansive panoramic views of the surrounding alpine world.
