Pals has been cultivating rice since the 15th century, but there was a time when the neighbors rebelled against the rice paddies because they associated their stagnant waters with diseases and epidemics. The situation went so far that in 1838 a royal order prohibited the cultivation of rice in the area. Decades later it was revived using more modern water circulation systems. Today, the rice paddies are one of the most characteristic images of Pals and cycling through them in spring, when the flooded fields look like huge mirrors, is almost as worthwhile as visiting the medieval village.
