Views of the Empuriabrava canal

Highlight • Viewpoint

Empuriabrava is an urbanization that constitutes a population entity in the municipality of Castelló d'Empúries, in the region of Alt Empordà, with 6813 census inhabitants (2018).

The urbanization is a residential marina built next to Els Graells beach and around an extensive network of artificial channels in the image of those existing on the coast of France (Port-Grimaud) and Florida (United States), a model inspired by Venice, and which repeats what had been developed in neighboring Santa Margarida (Roses) since 1960. It is currently considered the largest residential marina in the world.

The Muga River is a natural jewel that winds its way through the region of l'Alt Empordà, offering varied landscapes and rich biodiversity. Born in the foothills of the Pyrenees, the Muga River flows for approximately 58 kilometers before reaching its final destination in the Mediterranean Sea, specifically in the urbanization of Empuriabrava, in the municipality of Castelló d'Empúries.

The mouth of the Muga River in Empuriabrava is a spectacle in itself. Empuriabrava is known as the "Venice of the Mediterranean" due to its extensive network of navigable canals, and the point where the river meets the sea becomes a meeting point of fresh and salt waters. This area is particularly popular among water sports enthusiasts, such as sailing and kitesurfing, thanks to the favorable wind and water conditions.

Furthermore, the mouth of the Muga and its surroundings are part of the Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park, one of the most important wetlands in Catalonia. This park is a vital refuge for numerous species of migratory birds and a spectacular display of the region's natural beauty.

Muga Footbridge

Highlight • Bridge

A very useful footbridge for cyclists and walkers, as it allows you to cross the Muga and link the greenway with the Aiguamolls de l’Empordà and Empuriabrava, avoiding roads. The problem is its condition: when I crossed by bike, the wooden planks were moving, some were very deteriorated and the feeling of safety was quite low. Other cyclists have subsequently continued to report problems with the planks and even protruding nails. Perhaps one day —let’s hope before the next century— someone will remember that such a busy footbridge also needs maintenance. Better to cross it slowly and carefully.

Nice bridge to cross the river La Muga by bike or on foot. When you cross the bridge by bike you might think it will collapse anytime soon because the planks make a lot of noise. Passed it three times last week and nothing happened 😅

Beautiful path through the fields and along the ranch. The part between the trees is a bit small but gives great shade during the hotter days. Be careful after heavy rain, it can be very slippery

One of the most beautiful cycling paths in this area. From the wetlands to the river to the apple orchards, crossing small bridges., this path has it all. Great quality gravel. Some parts are a little narrow so watch out for oncoming traffic.
