A very beautiful vantage point on the Camino de Gordian. The view sweeps over the Aridane Valley and the Cumbre Vieja in the background.

The taxi still costs €51, and they're already waiting there. With four passengers, you can split the price accordingly, so it's worth the wait. The climb without a taxi takes about 2.5 hours. I'm glad I took the taxi.

The information center at the campsite. Very informative. There are toilets on site. You have to bring everything else yourself.

This mirador has the best view of the caldera because there are fewer trees to obscure the view. The short descent from the parking lot is worth it.

You'll find challenging mountain trails with significant elevation gains in areas like the Franklin Mountains State Park, as well as more leisurely paths through the Chihuahuan Desert and along urban parks. Options range from rugged, rocky ascents to smooth, paved surfaces, catering to various preferences and fitness levels.
While many routes in the region are rated as difficult, El Paso does offer easier options. For instance, the 1.4-mile trail around Ascarate Lake in Ascarate Park is smooth, flat, and well-lit, making it ideal for a relaxed jog. The Rio Grande Riverpark Trail also provides miles of paved, accessible paths. For those looking for a slightly longer but still manageable desert experience, the Lazy Cow Trail is a relatively flat 6.2-mile route.
For breathtaking views, the Franklin Mountains State Park is unparalleled. Trails within the Tom Mays Unit, such as the Aztec Caves Trail, offer scenic vistas of the Rio Grande Valley. The surrounding Chihuahuan Desert also provides unique desert flora and mountain backdrops. Even urban trails like the Rio Grande Riverpark Trail offer pleasant views of the water, wildlife, and city skyline.
Yes, there are several circular running routes. For a challenging loop, consider the Gordian Trail Loop, which is 7.7 miles long and features a substantial climb. Another option is Petroglifos Lomo Gordo — circular by Pista de Valencia, a 6.4-mile trail through varied terrain. For a shorter, easier loop, Ascarate Park offers a 1.4-mile circuit around its lake.
El Paso's running routes are rich with natural beauty. El Paso, known as 'Sun City,' boasts over 300 days of sunshine annually, making it suitable for outdoor activities year-round. However, spring and fall generally offer the most comfortable temperatures for jogging. Summers can be very hot, so early morning or late evening runs are advisable, and winters are mild. Always check the forecast and hydrate adequately, especially in the desert climate.

Routes like the Colors Waterfall through the Ravine of Anguish – Caldera de Taburiente National Park, at 6.9 miles with considerable elevation, or the 7.7-mile Gordian Trail Loop, offer rigorous workouts for seasoned runners.
Many popular parks and trailheads, such as those in Franklin Mountains State Park (e.g., Tom Mays Unit) and Ascarate Park, offer dedicated parking facilities. For information on public transport options to various parks and trails, it's best to consult the official El Paso city resources. While El Paso is a desert environment, some areas offer more shade than others. McKelligon Canyon, nestled on the southeastern side of the Franklin Mountains, is known for its cooler temperatures and can provide some relief. For routes with more consistent shade, consider trails that pass through more densely vegetated areas or plan your runs for early morning or late evening to avoid the peak sun hours.
Many outdoor areas in El Paso are dog-friendly, but policies can vary by specific park or trail. Franklin Mountains State Park generally allows dogs on trails, but they must be leashed. It's always recommended to check the specific rules for each trail or park you plan to visit. Ensure your dog is well-hydrated, especially in the desert climate, and pick up after them.
