At the edge of the caldera, at an altitude of approximately 2,400 meters, a number of telescopes are lined up at Roque de los Muchachos: optical and infrared night-vision telescopes, solar telescopes, and instruments for high-energy astrophysics. We took part in a guided tour and highly recommend it. It's essential to book online in advance from home; spontaneous bookings on-site are usually not possible. The city beach of Santa Cruz de La Palma is an artificial, black sand beach located directly on Avenida Marítima in the city center. It opened in April 2017 and replaced the former historic beach, Caleta del Varadero, which was lost when the promenade was built in 1949. The beach is approximately 1.2 km long and about 50 m wide, with easy access to the Atlantic Ocean. Easy access directly from the promenade. Showers, restrooms, sun umbrella/lounger rentals, sports areas (volleyball, beach soccer), and a children's playground are available. Suitable for families, swimming, and leisure activities; windsurfing and kitesurfing are also possible. Its location in the capital makes it particularly attractive, as cafés, restaurants, and the promenade are right next door. The black volcanic sand is typical of the Canary Islands. The water is calm, as the city promenade and harbor areas often break up the waves. Especially popular at sunrise, as its easterly location offers a great view over the Atlantic Ocean.

The statue honors the musical groups that used to parade through the city before Christmas, singing songs like "Lo Divino." The statue was unveiled in 1997 to honor the groups who had continued this tradition for 50 years prior to that year.

The routes often lead to panoramic viewpoints across the island. For instance, the Mirador de los Andenes – Roque de los Muchachos loop from Santa Cruz de La Palma takes you through high-altitude volcanic landscapes with stunning vistas. A challenging option is the View of Puerto Espíndola – Natural Spring Fountain loop from Los Sauces, which features substantial climbs and descents.

Public transport on La Palma, primarily bus services (guaguas), connects many towns and villages. While some routes might start directly from urban centers, reaching more remote trailheads might require planning. It's advisable to check local bus schedules and routes in advance to see if they align with your chosen starting points.
Many routes pass through or near villages and towns where you can find local cafes, restaurants, or small shops to refuel. Especially in areas like Santa Cruz de La Palma or Villa de Mazo, there are ample opportunities for refreshments. However, on more remote sections, it's always wise to carry sufficient water and snacks.
Given the significant elevation changes and diverse terrain, layering is key. Even on warm days, temperatures can drop considerably at higher altitudes. Wear moisture-wicking base layers, a cycling jersey, and bring a windproof or waterproof jacket. Cycling shorts are recommended for comfort, and a helmet is essential. Don't forget sun protection, as the sun can be intense.
While the main routes are popular for good reason, exploring some of the less-trafficked paths can reveal hidden gems. Consider routes that venture into the island's interior or lesser-known coastal sections. For example, the Villa de Mazo Town Hall loop from Santa Cruz de La Palma offers a different perspective away from the highest peaks, providing a blend of cultural and natural scenery.
