Very good and well-thought-out, built hut with a plexiglass pane and benches on the outer walls. The condition was also absolutely clean. We gladly had our snack break here.

The castle is being gradually restored by the support association with professional stonemasons. There is a room with a wood-burning stove and plexiglass panes that can be heated for the helpers. A barbecue area has also been set up in the former castle moat with a covered hut for the restorers.

The shelter (French: 'Abri') was rebuilt in September 2025 and named 'Waldi,' as I learned from a knowledgeable local hiking guide. This new type of shelter was designed by the Club Vosgien Niederbronn-les-Bains; plans can be requested from them. During the day, a maximum of 15 people can sit and rest here (inside and outside combined). If necessary, the two wide benches in the fairly sheltered interior offer (at least!) two very comfortable sleeping places. A long-distance hiker's dream 😍 Hopefully, Waldi will be found in more places in the forest in the future! This (legal) multiple use of shelters is long overdue in Germany, too.

The washing place (Waschpritch in Alsatian) is located in the center of the village. The washerwomen went to the washing place [on the Wengelsbach stream] to wash their laundry. Next to a horse paddock, a small flag sign rather inconspicuously indicates that we are just crossing the "Green Border" between Germany and France. An old border stone appears to be standing directly on the fence of the horse paddock.
