This cross, which dominates the village and the town hall, reflects a turbulent episode in the life of the community and the nation. In 1905, in the context of the debates about secularism and the separation of church and state, the parish priest of Génat, Louis Auriol, vigorously opposed the legally mandated inventory of his church's property: "This law is unjust, condemned by God Himself, since it was condemned by our Holy Father, the Pope" and because it represents "an attack on justice and freedom." In protest, after being triumphantly transported to the village, this cross was erected on top of the pitch sealed on one of the two millstones of a mill.

The church belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of Lagrasse, in the heart of the Corbières. During the 11th century, the Abbey of Boulbonne, of which important buildings still survive in Cintegabelle, acquired several properties in the Génat area, including the "Barn of Sabarthès." The church belongs to the early Southern Romanesque style, like many sacred buildings in the valley: Niaux, Miglos, Sabart, and Vicdessos. Only the bell tower, with its square turret pierced on all sides by two stories with double bays, authentically reflects this architectural form. The structure consists of a facing of stones broken or shattered with a hammer, set in mortar, and placed in regular seats according to a technique originating from Lombardy. This technique can currently be observed only in part of the south wall and in the ruins of an apse. Over the centuries, the church has undergone numerous renovations. In this year, and specifically in 1848, the building was extensively remodeled, with its facade reoriented to the west. The most recent restoration, the installation of a slate roof and repair of the façade, dates back to 2015. Its windswept location explains the various episodic damages to the roof.
