Punchy Hills and a Wet Bum
Wanted to do more hills today, so I put a bunch of them together—many suggested by others commenting here, so thank you!
I planned the route a week ago quickly, thought i will go over it again, didn’t. Then I realised, on the go, a few hills were actually downhill, so I’ll have to come back and do them properly.
I woke up to my alarm this time and wasn’t sure what to do because the weather kept changing. It looked wet outside, but as Nike says, “Just do it”—so I did.
Since I don’t have mudguards, I dressed a bit strangely to protect my bum. I wore spray shorts—basically MTB shorts—not waterproof, but they could save my bum a bit. I wasn’t planning on going to the Surrey Hills, so the cyclist fashion police weren’t a concern; that’s a definite no-no for MTB shorts on a road bike.
I arrived at the start before 6 a.m. and went straight onto the first hill. I had lights, so all good. Took the first picture showing the 16% climb sign, but iPhone night mode ruined it a bit: it shows light in the sky, but in reality, you couldn’t see the road or the sky.
The first hill was Titsey Hill, just 3–4 km in, so my legs were fresh but not warmed up much. I think it’s even worse to do a hill right away than after lots of miles. It felt okay—not that steep. Suddenly I saw a sign telling me to turn right onto White Hill. Hmm. But Titsey wasn’t finished yet, so I went up to finish Titsey and then turned back down to do White Hill.
Titsey was okay, not too much of a climb, to be honest, I didn’t feel it.
White Hill? Steeper but short, so both done without any issues.
While going through Biggin Hill town, I came across Stock Hill. Wow. That hill hit me hard. Short but steep—a really punchy hill. I wouldn’t want to live on that road/street. Definitely worth mentioning the hill here.
Next up, Brasted Hill—but I realized I was going downhill, so nevermind, next time. Same with Toys Hill. Urrg. I’ll be back.
Then I checked what else I had planned: Kidd’s Hill, good; then Idle and Star Hill. Black Hill was downhill too—can’t have everything.
Kidd’s Hill, aka “The Wall,” was good. Punchy, long, and you can see it all in front of you, almost the whole way. There’s a triple hill view, sort of, which makes it even worse because you see and know you’re not done yet. It wasn’t crazy steep, but it was a proper climb—easily top 5 for me, maybe even tougher than Barhatch Lane. Once at the top, the scenery was stunning. It looked like the New Forest—sun shining, great views.
Downhill on Black Hill was nice.
Idle Hill: I’ve been here a few times before. It’s a main road, long-ish, steep-ish, but nothing crazy. I did my PR here today, so I guess that’s a win.
Star Hill: a bit horrible. Cars around, it is a long bend, cars can’t see so they not overtaking and are stuck behind you, then on the long stretch they pass fast. Long, horrible hill—it always feels like forever to me. So, Star Hill? No stars from me 😂
All in all, a good ride today. Felt okay, a bit cautious on corners since lanes were wet and full of leaves—it was slippery—but it was a great day in the saddle. Been to new places, did plenty of hills. Perfect day for a ride.
