Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it typically take to hike this trail?

The trail is approximately 7.4 kilometers long and generally takes around 2 hours to complete. This duration can vary based on your pace, stops for photos, and how much time you spend enjoying the views.

What is the terrain like on the Cliff Trail?

While the overall difficulty is rated as easy, the trail does feature sections along cliffs, offering dramatic coastal views. Expect a mix of paths, potentially uneven in places, as you traverse the Monhegan Wildlands. It's a classic coastal hiking experience.

Is the trail suitable for beginners or families with children?

Yes, with an 'easy' difficulty rating, this trail is generally suitable for beginners and families. However, always exercise caution, especially near cliff edges, and ensure children are supervised. The varied terrain keeps it engaging.

Where can I park and access the trailhead?

Access to Monhegan Island, where the trail is located, is typically via ferry. Once on the island, the trailhead for the Cliff Trail is usually well-marked from the main village area. Parking is not a concern on the car-free island itself; you would park at the ferry terminal on the mainland.

Are dogs allowed on the trail?

Generally, dogs are welcome on trails in Monhegan Wildlands. However, it's always best to keep them on a leash, especially given the cliffside sections and to protect the local wildlife and natural environment. Please remember to clean up after your pet.

What is the best time of year to hike this route?

The trail is beautiful in all seasons, but late spring through early fall (May to October) offers the most pleasant weather for hiking. Summer provides lush greenery and warmer temperatures, while spring and fall showcase vibrant foliage and fewer crowds. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear for potentially colder and windier conditions.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for the Monhegan Wildlands?

Monhegan Wildlands is a preserved area, but typically there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike its trails. However, you will need to pay for ferry transportation to Monhegan Island. It's always a good idea to check the latest information from the Monhegan Associates, who manage the wildlands, for any updates.

What kind of views and landmarks can I expect along the way?

Does this trail connect with other paths on Monhegan Island?

While the primary section is the Cliff Trail (#1), it also passes through parts of Cathedral Woods Trail (#11), Black Head Trail (#10), Pebble Beach Trail (#14), Underhill Trail (#3), and Lobster Cove Trail. Bring water, snacks, sun protection (hat, sunscreen), and a camera to capture the stunning views. Binoculars can be great for birdwatching.

Are there any facilities or amenities nearby?

Monhegan Island is a small, remote community. You'll find limited amenities in the village, including a few small shops, galleries, and places to eat.
