Yes, the trail is generally dog-friendly. However, please keep dogs under control, especially when passing through areas with livestock or wildlife, and always clean up after your pet.
The trail can be enjoyed year-round, but the best time is typically from spring to autumn for more pleasant weather. Be aware that conditions can be challenging in icy or very windy weather, making warm clothing and sturdy, grippy footwear essential during colder months.
No, there are no permits or entrance fees required to hike the Carn na Leitire loop on the Abriachan trails.
The Carn na Leitire loop is classified as a moderate hike, requiring good fitness. While some sections near the car park are easier and suitable for pushchairs, the ascent to Carn na Leitire involves steep gradients, narrow paths, and steps, making it unsuitable for pushchairs and challenging for very young children or beginners. Good fitness and sure-footedness are recommended.
The terrain is varied, featuring a mix of clear paths and tracks through woodland and open moorland. You will encounter steep ascents, particularly towards the summit, and some sections may have loose gravel. Walking poles are recommended for stability, especially on moderately steep slopes.
Along the route, you'll find several interesting features. The summit of Carn na Leitire Summit Cairn offers spectacular 360-degree views of Loch Ness, the Cairngorms, and Ben Wyvis. You can also discover reconstructed historical structures like a Bronze Age hut and a hillside shieling, and pass by the Heather Hut Shelter. There's also a wildlife hide overlooking Loch Laide, and the Abriachan Eco-Campsite Café is a unique stop.
The loop is approximately 11 km (6.8 miles) long and typically takes around 3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how often you stop to enjoy the views and points of interest.
Yes, near the car park, you'll find composting toilets and an adventure playground. A unique and hospitable stop along the route is the Abriachan Eco-Campsite Café, known for its homemade cakes and distinctive atmosphere.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with other official trails, including parts of the Great Glen Way, the Great Glen Way - alternative via Carb na Leitire, and the Peat Path.
The ascent to Carn na Leitire can be steep. We recommend wearing sturdy, grippy footwear and considering bringing walking poles for added stability, especially if you are carrying a child or have less sure footing. Take your time and enjoy the panoramic views as you climb.
Today we headed to Abriachan Forest, high above Loch Ness. We set off in perfect weather and with virtually no wind. It's a very swampy area, but the paths allow us to cross it dry-footed. We were treated to wonderful flora, a rustic shelter, and a magnificent view of Loch Ness. As an insider tip, we then visited the outdoor cafe in the middle of the forest. We'll always remember the sumptuous meal, followed by coffee and homemade lemon cake, as well as the friendly robin...
