Carn na Leitire Summit Cairn

Highlight • Summit

This is such a lovely spot and the walk up through Abriachan woods makes it a perfect day out. There are nice little signboards to tell the history of the peat industry in the area and if you got an eye for plants, you'll relish the diversity up there.

If you are on the Great Glen Way, you should definitely take a break here. Absolutely worth seeing and experiencing. Fits in any category of campsite or cafe I know. I would describe it as an organic farm - hippie - forest camping with a cafe and you feel as if you are visiting very dear grandparents. The two hosts, an older couple, are incredibly hospitable and come with each conversation. Each guest is asked what his name is, where he comes from, where he goes and they tell little stories. There are homemade cakes and freshly prepared soup.
The simple wooden tables and benches stand in a clearing between bushes and trees near a pool. There are chickens everywhere and, as a special attraction, a really big, black pig.

Who hikes along the Great Glen Way definitely should take brake here. Absolutely worth to see and to experience. It does not fit in any category of campsite or cafe I know. I would describe it as Ecofarm-Hippie-Woodcamping with Cafe and it feels like visiting very lovely grandparents. The hosts, an elderly couple, are incredibly hospitable and get into a conversation with everyone. Everybody wants to be asked for the name, where he or she comes from and where they go as well as they like their own stories. The homemade cake on soup.
The simple wooden tables and benches are placed on a clearing between the trees and bushes near a small tarn. Everywhere chickens are running around and getting a big, black pig.

September 23, 2025, Wanderung mit Blick auf Loch Ness 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Today we headed to Abriachan Forest, high above Loch Ness. We set off in perfect weather and with virtually no wind. It's a very swampy area, but the paths allow us to cross it dry-footed. We were treated to wonderful flora, a rustic shelter, and a magnificent view of Loch Ness. As an insider tip, we then visited the outdoor cafe in the middle of the forest. We'll always remember the sumptuous meal, followed by coffee and homemade lemon cake, as well as the friendly robin...
