Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to hike the Trail of the Cippi of the Serenissima?

This komoot Tour, which is a ring route, typically takes around 4 hours to complete. However, your actual duration may vary depending on your pace, stops for photos, and breaks.

What is the terrain like on this trail?

The trail offers varied landscapes. Sections within the Cansiglio forest feature dirt roads and paths through mountain pastures and woodlands, often providing ample shade. Other parts can be more undulating and elevated, with areas described as having gullies and unique bald, grey, or astral hills sculpted by water and wind. You'll also encounter scrub wood and oak forests.

Is the Trail of the Cippi of the Serenissima suitable for beginners?

While some portions, particularly within the Cansiglio forest, are considered suitable for less experienced hikers and families due to mostly dirt roads, the overall komoot Tour is rated as 'difficult'. It includes demanding stretches with significant altitude changes, so beginners should be prepared for a challenging hike.

What can I see along the route?

The trail is rich in historical and natural sights. You'll encounter the ancient 'cippi' (boundary stones) marking the former border of the Venetian Republic. Notable highlights on this specific route include the Carlo and Massimo Semenza Mountain Hut, the striking Sasson della Madonna, and the Baita degli Alpini (Former Mognol Huts). The Cansiglio forest also offers beautiful views of verdant pastures and vibrant autumn colors.

What is the best time of year to hike this trail?

The trail can be enjoyed across multiple seasons. Autumn is particularly vibrant in the Cansiglio forest, with a spectrum of yellows and reds. Spring and summer offer lush greenery and pleasant temperatures. Winter hiking is possible but requires appropriate gear and caution due to potential snow and ice.

Is the trail dog-friendly?

Generally, dogs are allowed on trails in this region. However, it's always recommended to keep your dog on a leash, especially in areas with wildlife or livestock, and to follow local regulations regarding waste disposal. Be mindful that some sections may be challenging for smaller or less agile dogs due to the varied terrain and difficulty.

Do I need a permit or pay an entrance fee for this trail or the Alpago park?

There are no specific permits or entrance fees required to hike the Trail of the Cippi of the Serenissima itself. The trail is located within the Alpago region, which is known for its natural beauty, but it does not operate as a gated park requiring an entrance fee for general access to its trails.

Where can I park and access the trailhead?

Specific parking information for this exact komoot Tour is not provided in the data. However, for trails in the Alpago region, parking is typically available near popular starting points or mountain huts. It's advisable to check local maps or resources like visitvalsugana.it or visitdolomitibellunesi.com for detailed logistical information before your trip.

Does this trail intersect other well-known paths?

Yes, this route covers a significant portion of the 'Sentiero dei cippi della Serenissima' (50%) and also includes sections of the 'Alta via n. 6 delle Dolomiti - XI tappa' (28%), 'Sulle tracce del cervo' (18%), 'Sentiero Alpago Natura' (9%), 'Alta via n. 6 delle Dolomiti - X tappa' (3%), and 'Alta via n. 7 delle Dolomiti - IV Tappa' (2%).

Are there any facilities or places to get food and water along the way?

The route passes by mountain huts such as the Carlo and Massimo Semenza Mountain Hut and the Baita degli Alpini (Former Mognol Huts), which typically offer refreshments and shelter. Additionally, the Cansiglio area has characteristic farmhouses and picnic areas where you might find local amenities. Always carry sufficient water, especially on longer or more demanding sections.

What should I bring for a hike on this trail?

Given the 'difficult' rating and varied terrain, it's essential to bring sturdy hiking boots, appropriate clothing layers for changing weather, sufficient water, snacks, a map or GPS device (like komoot), and sun protection. Trekking poles can be helpful for the undulating and elevated sections. If hiking in autumn or winter, be prepared for cooler temperatures and potential snow.

October 12, 2025, Anello in Alpago Al Rifugio Semenza e bivacco Laste’

I've done this hike over and over again, but it's always beautiful. It's a great workout not too far from home. Yesterday, at Forcella Lasté, I witnessed a natural spectacle. The clouds formed a soft blanket covering the valley, only the highest peaks peeking out to catch the warm autumn sun. A feast for the eyes... the return journey through the beech, larch, and fir forest is always a rewarding experience. The silence is broken only by footsteps among the leaves, and autumn colors the trees, creating a hypnotic panorama.

Today outing in Alpago, in front of the Cansiglio plain, for a really difficult route, no beginners needed, which with its 800m climb, with gradients of 30/35%, puts the legs to the test. Stop at the Semenza refuge and return in a loop with a descent of the same gradient. Varied landscapes of immeasurable beauty. Rating 10.

There are paid parking lots in Col Indes... I didn't buy a ticket, it went well... I recommend parking a little further down ☺️

Col Indes (Malga Pian delle Lastre) - path 926 - Malga Pradosan - path 923 - Refuge Semenza - path 923 - Sasson della Madonna - Baracche Mognol - Col Indes (Malga Pian delle Lastre) From Tambre (BL) you reach Col Indes and continue in the direction of Malga Pian Grant (paid parking). At the end of the summer season, vehicular traffic is allowed to reach Pian delle Lastre, from which path 926 begins for the Semenza Refuge. After just 150 m on the forest-pastoral road, go up to the left making a short turn near Malga Pradosan, currently unusable. The path rises with a constant slope inside the beautiful beech and larch forest, cutting the slopes of Costa Schienon halfway up the hill. After passing the Coston di Cima Vacche, a panoramic traverse in constant ups and downs leads us to join path 923 which climbs from the right. The last stretch, under a slightly exposed rocky ridge, leads to the Semenza Refuge. The descent now takes place on the path encountered previously, along the Val de Piera, a valley between Cima delle Vacche and Cimon di Palantina. After the cableway of the refuge you reach the Sasson della Madonna, and from here you go down by hairpin bends to the small esplanade on which the Baita degli Alpini (Baracche Mognol) stands. From the hut the path connects to a beautiful mule track which, through a magnificent beech forest, leads back to Malga Pian delle Lastre.

Wouldn't reccomend During the Winter, the snow made it a challenge and you barely could see the trails, to come back there wasnt a trail due to beng covered by 1 meter of snow

First group outing with the CAI for the 2025 via ferrata course. No equipped routes, for now, but an introductory outing in which we reached the Rifugio Semenza, in a beautiful circular itinerary in the Prealps, combining walking with various moments of in-depth study on climbing techniques in a snowy environment. This course is exactly what I would have liked to do years ago: study of the mountains, the correct equipment, the techniques. What can I say, better late than never.

Usual tour, usual place....but always beautiful, great training not too far from home. Exceptional flowering, scents and colors accompany the climb. The weather was favorable and we concluded very calmly ... no one wanted to go down anymore😅

Intense hike with nice climb. It took us 5 hours not 3 hours 15 as indicated by komoot
