Cala Gonone

Highlight • Settlement

The town of Cala Gonone is located in the middle of the east coast of Sardinia on the Golfo di Orosei. The district belongs to the municipality of Dorgali. The former fishing village has now become a pure holiday resort, a seaside resort with a beach and caves. As practically everywhere in Sardinia, there are only a few taller houses.

Palmasera Beach

Highlight • Beach

Cala Gonone is located in the center of the eastern coast of Sardinia, on the Gulf of Orosei. The area around Cala Gonone was already inhabited in the Nuragic era, then Roman and finally Byzantine. The remains of a Nuragic settlement, the Nuraghe Mannu, are located on the outskirts of the town, along the road to Dorgali. The modern hamlet was founded by a colony of fishermen coming from the island of Ponza at the beginning of the 20th century. However, the locality remained largely isolated from the rest of Sardinia until the opening of the tunnel in the hills from Dorgali in 1860.

This former fishing town has now become mainly a tourist destination thanks to its splendid beach and the numerous caves in the area. There are several small beaches with fine red gravel, a particularly evocative setting in the morning when the sun shines directly on the sand, creating a contrast with the turquoise sea.
