Bad Bentheim was once known at home and abroad for the gold-colored sandstone, which is the theme of this 11-kilometer circular hike. Since the Middle Ages, Bentheim gold has been mined in local quarries and used to construct various buildings.
The perfect starting point for this tour is the old quarry at the open-air stage, where you can already marvel at the yellow and orange rock faces. Over the Töddenbrücke you get into the forest, where there is also an abandoned quarry. You explore this stony forest landscape on rustic paths before you turn south.
Along wide fields and meadows, the tour leads you to a rest hut with a sandstone stele. After a break you slowly approach Bad Bentheim, where you pass the town hall made of Bentheim sandstone. If you want, you can make a detour to the Sandstone Museum from here. Finally you walk back to the starting point of the hike.
