Back on the bike today. From the front door, 500 meters up the mountain. Put on your vest at the top and race down to Poggio. It's amazing how beautiful the mountain villages are. Then head south on the coastal road into the sun. There's little traffic, but nothing to eat either. Everything here is practically closed, so granola bars will have to suffice. One question remains: How do they manage this during peak season? There's no parking, and almost all beach access roads are secured with barriers or are private roads. I can't imagine how that's supposed to work.
✏️ The climb to Monte Perone, starting from Marina di Campo, is among the most challenging on the Island of Elba. Narrow road, uneven roadbed and gradients of more than 15% for various stretches, but once at the top, the panorama pays off. Then descent to Poggio and the Western ring (continuous ups and downs) anticlockwise with views of the various beaches and coves with the islands of Capraia, Corsica, Pianosa and Montecristo in the background.
