Hiking
Embark on a moderate hike to the Reinbach Waterfalls near Sand in Taufers, a journey spanning 5.2 miles (8.3 km) with an elevation gain of 1097 feet (334 metres). This route, which typically takes around 2 hours and 44 minutes, winds through lush woods and alongside the rushing Reinbach stream. You will encounter a mix of surfaces, including asphalt, dirt roads, and forested paths, with stone steps and wooden constructions guiding you. A notable viewing bridge allows you to look into the depths of the cascading water, especially at the third and highest waterfall, offering an untamed natural experience.
While the initial sections to the first waterfall are often easy, the path becomes narrower, steeper, and more challenging as you continue towards the second and third falls. Sure-footedness is required for these demanding sections, where you will navigate roots and rocks. Consider visiting in summer, when glacier meltwater increases the water flow, enhancing the spectacle of the falls. Plan your visit to allow ample time to enjoy the various viewpoints and the changing terrain.
This trail is located within the picturesque Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park in South Tyrol, Italy, an area known for its glaciers. As you hike, you can explore the Franziskusweg, or St. Francis' Path, which features 10 meditative spots with sculptures and panels leading to the Franz and Klara Chapel. Many routes also integrate a visit to the medieval Taufers Castle, which overlooks Sand in Taufers, blending natural beauty with cultural exploration. For an added thrill, especially in summer, you might even spot the Fly-Line Wasserfall zipline descending from the top waterfall.

Our start today was Sand in Taufers. First we went along the Ahr towards Reichenbach. From there we hiked uphill along the Franciscan path. Three magnificent waterfalls and the Franciscan and Clara chapel followed at short intervals. We went back along the opposite slope to our starting point. Waterfalls that are absolutely worth seeing. They are among South Tyrol's most beautiful and at the same time most spectacular natural treasures! Very elaborately prepared, stone-paved and steeply ascending mountain path with wooden protective railing. The immense power of the water can be observed very well from the viewpoints and is more than impressive! After the third waterfall, we follow the path further uphill and after about 20 minutes we reach the Franz and Klara Chapel. This is a former castle chapel. The way back must first be walked along a narrow, quiet road that runs far above Sand in Taufers. Branching off from this, we first follow a meadow path bordered by a natural wall, which later leads steeply downhill through high coniferous forest to Sand.
Today a leisurely round from Sand in Taufers: First to Taufers Castle, first on the nature experience path, then up to the Nöckler Höfe, from there to the upper start of the Franziskusweg, which goes along the Reinbach and Reinbach waterfalls and back to Sand in Taufers along the Ahr. Finally, a delicious Aperol🍹
