Big tour through the mining ⛏️ area starting in Rodalquilar. Official hiking trail 🧦, in places more of a path and not suitable for cycling! Short detour up to the mine entrance (one of countless and freely accessible ones!) which was converted into a tunnel in a scene from 🤠 "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade". 😏
Today a walk through the Cabo del gata nature park and the gold mines after the discovery of gold and the gold rush in 1833. A beautiful walk but some parts were quite steep, up to 35%. The ruins of the gold mines were disappointing, no maintenance by the state, just let them fall into disrepair. On the last part, very steep stairs down, Inge blocked it for a moment but with a little help it worked. For the added value seekers of flora and fauna definitely recommended. On the way we had a visit from a ghekko that crawled up my trouser leg. Finish with a café con leche in Las Isletas del Moto's, in Rodalquilar nothing was open.
From Rodalquilar we walk around the Cerro del Cinto and explore a fertile riverbed, former mines and the ruins of a country house. Surrounded by palm trees, oleander and figs we enjoy wonderful views over the nature park. From Rodalquilar we climb up the Rambla de la Granadilla and hike along a wonderful mountain path on the back of the Cerro del Cinto. We then make a detour to the Cortijo del Fraile, an 18th century Dominican manor house. A tragedy that occurred here inspired Federico García Lorca to write his drama Blood Wedding. We hike back to Rodalquilar past impressive rocks and the remains of old mines.
A beautiful hike in an enchanting landscape, primarily on T2 trails. A wonderful day in the Sierra Cabo de Gata!
