Highlights of Appleby-in-Westmorland

Highlight • Pub

The Cumbrian market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland is set in prime walker's country, nestled in the verdant Eden Valley. It is surrounded by natural beauty, with the Lake District only a short drive to the west, the North Pennines AONB to the east and the northern termination of the Yorkshire Dales just a stone's throw south. Early June sees accommodation in short supply, as the famous horse fair take over the town.

Appleby Castle and Caesar's Tower

Highlight • Historical Site

This magnificent castle, standing proud above the Eden Valley, was built at the behest of William II after he had driven the Scots out of Westmorland in 1092. Caesar's Tower is the oldest part of the building, the top of which gives splendid views of the surrounding countryside.

Like so many in the region, the castle was owned by the Cliffords. The great hall once displayed 'the Great Picture', a triptych showing Lady Anne as a teenager on the left, then as an elder on the right, with her family in the middle. The artwork is now on display at the Abbot Hall Gallery and Museum, Kendal.

Hoff Beck Footbridge

Highlight • Bridge

A sturdy bridge over Hoff Beck, near Dougles Ing. A green spot, particularly in the summer when the trees are green. There are steps leading up onto the bridge, which you could use to sit on and enjoy the idyllic scenery - hopefully, you will encounter the horses in the fields, somehow adding to the serenity of the place.

Rutter Force Waterfall

Highlight • Historical Site

An impressive waterfall on Hoff Beck, just upstream of an old mill (now self-catering accommodation). The mill was made for grinding corn, then converted to manufacture bobbins and finally a sawmill.
It's easily visible from the bridge.

St James' Church, Great Ormside

Highlight • Religious Site

One of the oldest churches in Cumbria, dating back to 1140, St James' parish church has yielded some interesting archaeological discoveries. An Anglo Saxon cup found here is thought to be one of the finest pieces of preserved metalwork from the Dark Ages. It is now on display in the Yorkshire Museum in York.
