This is a difficult and challenging high-mountain trek, rated as a "hard hike" (SAC 4–6). It requires very good physical fitness, sure-footedness, sturdy footwear, and alpine experience. Be prepared for significant elevation changes and potentially hazardous sections, especially on the crests.
The terrain is highly varied and demanding. It starts on a track from the Las Planes car park, transitioning to a steeper path. You'll encounter smoother trails on the western slopes of Puigmal and sharp, rocky crests on the eastern side. Expect technical sections, narrow paths, and continuous climbing, with potential for late spring snow and falling rocks in upper areas. The ridges near the summits are treeless.
The best time to undertake this hike is generally during the summer months when conditions are most favorable. In summer, you'll find alpine meadows bursting with wildflowers. While manageable then, the route transforms into a serious mountaineering challenge in winter conditions due to snow and ice.
The hike starts from the Las Planes car park, which is situated near the former Err-Puigmal ski resort. This is your primary access point for the trailhead.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required for day hiking on established trails within the Pyrénées Catalanes Regional Natural Park. However, always respect local regulations, especially concerning nature protection and potential restrictions during specific seasons or for certain activities.
While many trails in the Pyrénées Catalanes Regional Natural Park are dog-friendly, this particular route is very challenging with technical sections, rocky terrain, and potential exposure on crests. If you bring a dog, ensure it is highly fit, accustomed to difficult mountain terrain, and kept on a leash to protect wildlife and for its own safety.
You'll experience spectacular panoramic views, often described as a "sea of peaks" across France, Spain, and Andorra. Notable landmarks include the Clot de la Pastera (Cradle of Puigmal), the Puigmal d'Er Summit, Pic de Finestrelles, and Pic de Segre Summit (2,843 m). The trail also overlooks the picturesque Valle de Nuria and the Cerdanya valley. Pic de Finestrelles is famous for holding the world record for the most distant photographed landscape.
Given the difficult nature and high-mountain environment, you should bring sturdy, waterproof hiking boots with good ankle support, layers of clothing suitable for changing weather conditions (even in summer), rain gear, plenty of water, high-energy snacks, a map and compass (or GPS device), sun protection, and a first-aid kit. Trekking poles are highly recommended for stability on rocky and steep sections.
Yes, sections of this route intersect with other official trails. You will find parts of the Santuari de Núria al Coll de Finestrelles and the Camí de Fontalba al Puigmal along the way.
This specific route is not suitable for beginners. If you're looking for easier options in the Pyrénées Catalanes Regional Natural Park, it's advisable to research trails with lower elevation gain, shorter distances, and less technical terrain. Many areas within the park offer more moderate hikes, but this particular ascent to Pic de Finestrelles via Puigmal crests is for experienced hikers only.
The crests of Puigmal are challenging due to their exposure, rocky nature, and the presence of tougher gneiss rock on the eastern side, which creates sharp, technical sections. Hikers need to be extremely sure-footed, and in some parts, specialist equipment and prior experience may be necessary. The continuous climbing and potential for strong winds also add to the difficulty.
