Trail Reviews

Oxígeno
January 21, 2025, Sendero PR-G 98, el alma interior de Galicia.

“For centuries crouched / protected by the northern winds / guarded by the people passing by / protected by the vineyards”, with these affectionate and endearing verses the poet presents the Galician Ribeira Sacra on the banks of the Sil River, where the land emerges from the merciless water in search of the sky and along the way becomes a vineyard, a tree, a stone, a village and a rural world. The short-distance trail PR-G 98 is a charming route, located in the Ourense municipality of Parada de Sil, the environmental, historical and cultural heart of the Ribeira Sacra, an idyllic setting where Benedictine monks arrived in the 9th century and built hermitages, churches and a multitude of isolated and protected worship centres in the depths of the great gorge of the River Sil, beginning a process that culminated in the founding of several monasteries and small peasant villages that were part of the jurisdiction of the monks, who received rents and tenths for cereal harvests, forest resources and vineyard and chestnut crops. The trail is 18.3 kilometres long, forms two loops around Parada de Sil and you can choose the section according to your taste and preparation. The white and yellow stripes lead through pretty villages surrounded by orchards, fruit trees and dense chestnut groves framed by a labyrinth of old paths and stone walls covered with moss, ferns and withered leaves. Along the way there are viewpoints over the deep canyon of the Sil River and a detour to the monastery of Santa Cristina, one of the artistic jewels of the Ribeira Sacra among forests of fantasy and magic, full of ancient trees and medieval paths opened in the remote cliffs of the Sil Gorge by patient Benedictine monks, when they founded hermitages, churches and monasteries, sacralising for eternity the wildest and fiercest bank of the Galician rivers with the firefly churches of Santa Cristina and Santo Estevo.
