The ZL-003 is rated as a 'blue' trail, indicating an intermediate difficulty level. However, it's important to note that Zona Zero grading can be tougher than in other regions, meaning this 'blue' might feel more like a 'red' elsewhere. It has a moderate physical rating and is suitable for riders with some mountain biking experience.
The trail features a diverse mix of terrain, including approximately 16% medium-easy singletrack, forest tracks, and riverside paths. Expect rugged, often stony sections, root gardens, rocky areas, and potentially loose gravel, characteristic of the Aragonese Pyrenees foothills.
The route offers varied scenery and passes by several notable spots. You'll experience the beautiful, rugged character of the region, with one section being more solitary and another running along the banks of the Ara River. Highlights include the historic Aínsa Old Town, the Cruz Cubierta Monument, the Ara River Natural Pool at Boltaña, and the Puente de los Moscarales.
The best time to ride this loop is generally during spring and autumn when temperatures are milder. Summer can be very hot in the Spanish Pyrenees, making early morning or late afternoon rides preferable. Winter can bring colder temperatures and potential snow at higher elevations, though the trail itself is not at extreme altitudes.
The loop connects Aínsa and Boltaña, so you can typically start from either town. Both Aínsa and Boltaña offer parking options, often near the town centers or designated trail access points. The routes in Zona Zero are well-marked, making it easy to find the trailhead once you're in the area.
While dogs are generally allowed on trails in this region, it's always recommended to keep them on a leash, especially given the varied terrain, potential for wildlife encounters, and shared use with other outdoor enthusiasts. Ensure your dog is fit enough for the moderate difficulty and rugged sections.
Generally, there are no specific permits or entrance fees required to ride the mountain bike trails within the Zona Zero Pirineos area, including the ZL-003. However, it's always good practice to check the official Zona Zero website for any updated regulations or specific event requirements before your visit.
This loop is designed to connect Aínsa and Boltaña with distinct paths for the outbound and return journeys, offering varied scenery. It includes a very accessible singletrack section that serves as an excellent introduction to enduro-style riding. For those seeking more adventure, there's an optional variant to the Guaso Tower via the ZZ-009 route.
The routes in the Zona Zero area, including the ZL-003, are generally very well-marked with international mountain bike signs. This clear signage helps with navigation, allowing riders to focus on the experience rather than worrying about getting lost.
Yes, the ZL-003 trail intersects with several other routes in the Zona Zero network. Notable sections include parts of "Aínsa - Margudgued - Boltaña (desvío a Guaso)", "ZZ012-2 - Viaje al Inframundo V 2.1 (variante)", "ZZ006 - Trilogía de San Vicente v2.0", and "ZZ005 - Peñas Cinglas y Coda Sartén".
Yes, e-bikes are allowed on the Aínsa and Boltaña Loop (ZL-003). The trail's moderate difficulty and varied terrain make it a great option for e-bike riders looking to explore the Zona Zero area.
This walk is cool if you remove the passage by the path above the mirador de cinca. The edge of the rivers are pretty and very rolling, the passage in "the dunas" very playful. Back to the ainsa, I recommend that you stay on the track because the mirador de cinca trail is bad for mountain biking with several portages and a very steep descent, very rocky with short turns. Unless you are an experienced mountain biker, you will do a good part of it on foot like me. The track is pleasant to reach the top of Boltana. The descent is technical but fun.
