Strade Brute – the most hidden charms of Franciacorta

Gravel riding

This is Strade Brute, the longer version of the two proposals, with its almost 80 kilometers of development and a positive difference in altitude of 1,800 meters that should not be underestimated. I'd like to point out four climbs in particular, all immersed in the woods and with a truly "brute" surface, almost entirely dirt and not easy to tackle.

Make sure you have nimble gears fitted to your bike so you can enjoy this adventure to the fullest. I also advise you to use generous tires, to have fun in safety during the descents: it often happens that you find mud.

Starting from Monterotondo – following the route proposed for the event organized by the Franciacorta Ramingos – you can tackle the first stretch, which winds flat among the enchanting Franciacorta vines.

In any case, whatever point you choose to start your ride from, the itinerary includes a flat part of about 35 kilometers all on cycle/pedestrian roads included in the Sebino-Franciacorta area.

As already mentioned, the rest of the journey leads you to face various ups and downs in a splendid hilly landscape, to discover numerous places of historical and naturalistic interest. A fair amount of effort is the price to pay to enjoy this dynamic and fun ride and admire the beauty that this land can offer, in a delicate balance between tradition and innovation.

The most impressive climb is the one that leads to the Quarone plateau and which represents almost half of the total positive difference in height during the day. I therefore advise you not to do it "all in one breath", also considering its considerable length.

From the highest point – at 900 meters above sea level – enjoy the ridge that divides Valle Trompia from Franciacorta and proceed to the fantastic Sella dell'Oca, an ancient way of passage for partisans. If you like, take a break: go to the hamlet of Vesalla in Brione and discover the singularity of this ancient village surrounded by nature, inhabited by just over a dozen people.

At this point put yourself to the test and face the descent. Lose altitude but remain immersed in the woods, this time full of chestnut trees, particularly fascinating in the autumn season. For several kilometers you ride your bike along fantastic dirt trails, before tackling the last effort of the day.

Now all that remains is the steep climb towards the Sanctuary of the Madonna del Corno, a terrace of remarkable beauty on the Torbiere del Sebino Nature Reserve. What could be better than regenerating mind and body in front of a breathtaking view over the hills of Franciacorta?

Finally, conclude the loop with the last few pedal turns, breathing in the countryside air amidst the cultivated greenery and enjoying the perspective facing Lake Iseo.

Quarone Plateau

Highlight • Natural

The Quarone plateau, located at an altitude of 800 meters above sea level, is a vast area crossed by numerous paths and forest roads. This place is interesting for the karst phenomenon of sinkholes, which create funnel-shaped depressions, and for its rich vegetation, which includes large meadows, broad-leaved forests and centuries-old chestnut trees. Thanks to its altitude, well-balanced soil and cool climate, the Quarone plateau is a unique environment. It is frequented throughout the year by sports lovers and offers well-maintained paths perfect for pleasant walks.

Sella dell'Oca Pass

Highlight • Mountain Pass

The Sella dell'Oca locality is located on the ridge that divides Valle Trompia (Municipality of Villa Carcina) from Franciacorta (Municipality of Gussago).
A place where nature reigns.
From here an exciting descent begins, first on single track and then on double track up to Villa Carcina.

Vesalla

Highlight • Settlement

Vesalla is one of the six hamlets of the Municipality of Brione, in the province of Brescia and has just over a dozen inhabitants.

It can be reached from various points: from the Trompia Valley to the west, from the town of San Giovanni di Polaveno to the south and from the town of Brione to the east.

The place enjoys a silent tranquility and allows you to take various paths immersed in nature towards Pizzo Cornacchia, Sella dell'Oca, Quarone. We would like to point out the possibility of filling up your own water bottles.

This fantastic chestnut forest, reachable from different directions, represents an important hub in the area

It is very popular, both by people on foot and by bicycle, and is located a stone's throw from the town center of San Giovanni di Polaveno. Particularly evocative in the autumn season, thanks to the warm colors offered by the vegetation.

Iseo

Highlight • Settlement

Considered the "capital" of the lake of the same name, Iseo has a lively center with elegant shops, restaurants and clubs. It is very popular, especially on weekends, with numerous tourists and visitors. The buildings in the main streets are of considerable historical value.

Iseo is also a strategic point for reaching Monte Isola: in the port there is in fact the docking of the boat used for transporting passengers.
In the spring and autumn you can't miss a walk along the lakeside and in summer a nice refreshing swim on the well-known beach.

A stone's throw from the Torbiere del Sebino, Iseo also offers convenient access to the reserve (it is necessary to have a regular ticket at the vending machines for entry).
