Hiking

Embark on the Thomason Foss & Mallyan Spout loop from Goathland, a moderate hike through the North York Moors National Park. This 5.9-mile (9.5 km) route, with an elevation gain of 601 feet (183 metres), typically takes around 2 hours and 39 minutes to complete. You will discover two impressive waterfalls: the 70-foot (21m) Mallyan Spout, the tallest in the North York Moors, and the serene Thomason Foss nestled in a wooded ravine. The trail winds through varied terrain, including peaceful forests, open fields, and parts of an old railway line, offering picturesque views of the Esk Valley. In late summer, the heather blossoms add a spectacular splash of color across the moors.

Planning your visit requires some preparation for this moderately challenging route. While some paths are accessible, certain sections demand sure-footedness, especially the rocky scramble to Mallyan Spout. The track to Thomason Foss can be very boggy and narrow, particularly after rain, so sturdy, waterproof footwear is essential. Consider hiking during dry weather to avoid the wettest conditions. Getting close to Thomason Foss often involves scrambling over boulders, so be ready for varied ground.

Beyond the natural beauty, this loop offers a glimpse into local history and culture. Goathland village, your starting point, is famous as the filming location for the TV series "Heartbeat" and its railway station doubled as "Hogsmeade" in the Harry Potter films. The route also incorporates sections of the original Goathland to Grosmont railway line, showcasing the area's industrial past. You might even spot the North Yorkshire Moors heritage railway running nearby, adding to the charm of your hike.

Goathland railway station

Highlight • Historical Site

Goathland Station is one of the many ‘time warp’ railway stations along the spectacular North York Moors Railway (NYMR). Traditional, beautifully-presented and oozing charm, it feels like time stopped here some time in the 1950s or 60s.

The station has a few claims to fame, too. Fans of Harry Potter might recognise it as Hogsmeade Station in the first film and Goathland was used as the setting for Aidensfield in the ITV drama Heartbeat.

Thomason Foss

Highlight • Trail

Thomason Foss is a beautiful waterfall in an idyllic wooded ravine. The waterfall is accessed by a superb trail through the woodland. It’s well worth combining Thomason Foss with nearby Mallyan Spout waterfall, which is the tallest in the North York Moors.

Mallyan Spout Waterfall

Highlight • Natural Monument

With a vertical drop of 70 feet (21 m), Mallyan Spout is the tallest waterfall in the North York Moors. When you arrive at the waterfall, prepare to have your breath taken – the epic site has captivated visitors since Victorian times. The path to the waterfall can be technical in places, so sturdy shoes are recommended.

Trail Reviews

February 23, 2023, Thomason Foss & Mallyan Spout loop from Goathland — North York Moors National Park

Once again Komoot switched of the route I was following a couple of miles after the start, we started and finished at point B on the map. This was one of the nicest walks we've done, although not long it can be tricky especially on the approach to the Thomason Foss waterfall at beck hole, which can only be approached one way and returning the same way

The round proposed by Komoot is a real Komoot highlight. Very varied in a beautiful landscape. Due to the very damp weather, we saved the last part of the intended loop for the sake of our dog and went along the road back to the parking lot. The train station from the Harry Potter films is a must-see for fans and a must-see for everyone else.
