This hike is rated as moderate. While generally suitable for most fitness levels, it requires sure-footedness due to varying terrain, including rocky and pebbled sections, especially on the final ascent to Pizzo Sant'Angelo. Sturdy hiking boots are recommended.
The hike is approximately 7.39 km long and typically takes around 1 hour and 52 minutes to complete. However, some descriptions suggest longer durations depending on your pace and specific route taken.
The trail features a mix of surfaces. You'll start with a gentle uphill through ancient oak forests, then join an old road (with damaged asphalt) leading to the Geophysical Observatory of Gibilmanna. Expect narrow paths bordered by dense bushes, sections of Mediterranean scrub, and some rocky or pebbled stretches, particularly towards the Pizzo Sant'Angelo Summit.
The hike offers several notable points. You'll start near the Gibilmanna Sanctuary, pass by the Geophysical Observatory of Gibilmanna, and reach the Pizzo Sant'Angelo Summit. Along the way, enjoy the View of Pizzo Sant'Angelo and continuous panoramic vistas.
Yes, the trail is renowned for its continuous and grand views. You'll enjoy breathtaking vistas of the Madonie Mountains, including the Carbonara massif, surrounding towns like Isnello, and panoramic views extending to the Tyrrhenian coast, from Palermo to Buonfornello, and the iconic Rocca di Cefalù. On clear days from Pizzo Sant'Angelo, you might even spot Mount Etna.
The trail is enjoyable in various seasons. Spring offers lush greenery and wildflowers, while autumn provides pleasant temperatures and vibrant foliage. Summer can be hot, so an early start is recommended. Always check the weather forecast before heading out.
Parking is generally available near the starting point of the trail, close to the Gibilmanna Sanctuary. It's advisable to arrive early, especially during peak season, to secure a spot.
While the Parco delle Madonie generally allows dogs, it's always best to keep your dog on a leash to protect local wildlife and ensure a pleasant experience for all hikers. Please also ensure you clean up after your pet.
No, individual hikers typically do not need a permit or pay an entrance fee to access the trails within Parco delle Madonie, including this route. However, always respect park regulations and leave no trace.
Yes, sections of this route overlap with other official trails. Approximately 38% of the trail covers part of the Via dei Frati - Tappa n. 8, and a small portion (2%) follows the Sentiero Ferla – Bivio Pianetti.
Given the varied terrain and moderate difficulty, we recommend bringing sturdy hiking boots, trekking poles for stability, sufficient water, snacks, sun protection, and appropriate layers of clothing. A camera is also a must for the incredible views!
Circular tour from Gibilmanna to Pizzo Sant'Angelo Access from near Cefalù by eMTB (12.5 km, 750 m elevation gain) Unfortunately, we once again discovered that mountain biking is completely over in Sicily. Every path that even remotely looks interesting eventually ends in front of a 'Proprietà privata' sign and a locked gate (not to mention trails). ☹️ Road cyclists might be happy here - but mountain bikers probably won't. Once you reach Gibilmanna via paved roads, you'll find a nice hike up the local mountain. Impressive: the Sanctuary of Gibilmanna and the nature, which is recovering from a major forest fire along part of the trail. https://de.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gibilmanna

Breathtaking views throughout the entire climb!
A fun hike with stunning views from the top of the mountain. Long pants are recommended due to the bushes along the route.
Nice short hike for the quick lap. Unfortunately almost overgrown in the first third. The most beautiful views of the sea and over the valley.
